Evidence of extensive illegal dumping - including large amounts of asphalt ? has been found by the Mohawks of Tyendinaga. This discovery was made at the Thurlow Aggregates quarry site, occupied by the Mohawks for the past two weeks. The quarry is situated within the Culbertson Tract, land that is currently under Claim and that the Government has acknowledged rightfully belongs to the Mohawk community of Tyendinaga.

"It is now becoming clear why (Minister of Natural Resources) David Ramsay didn't want to revoke the quarry licence. The Province was using it to dump large amounts of Provincial Highway pavement instead of properly disposing of it," said spokesman Shawn Brant. Every two years, Canadian warships spend a month cruising Hawai'i, where they fire missiles and track "hostile" submarines on their ships' mid-frequency sonar. The enemy subs in these high sea battles aren't actually enemies at all: they are vessels from other friendly nations come to take part of the U.S. navy's biennial Rim of the Pacific Exercises (RIMPAC) war games.

Already by the late 1990s, the Natural Resources Defence Council (NRDC), a U.S. non-profit organization composed of scientists and lawyers, began sounding the alarm about what naval sonar was doing to whales and other marine mammals.

Joined by other groups, and mounting evidence, the NRDC says naval sonar kills whales and dolphins, and they're trying to get the U.S. courts to stop American and Canadian warships from holding the next RIMPAC in 2008.

The violence has driven some companies away. Willbros, one of the

I really do wonder why it is that men who consider themselves alternative cannot disengage from the old sexist models when sex is involved. And no, I do not believe it has to do with some inherent wiring that older men want to conquer young women naturally. This is a cultural thing. In many other cultures, for instance, the men are the ones who must get made up for the women. In many other cultures, older women are respected and younger women, likewise, are not sexualized for older men.

The Supreme Court has never, in the thirty-plus years since the right to abortion was won in Roe V. On Wednesday April 25th, members and allies of **No One is Illegal-Vancouver** returned to CIC offices, and despite being guaranteed a meeting...on Monday, this meeting did not happen. The group then proceeded to shut down the front doors of Citizenship and Immigration Canada, disrupting the business of deportation-as-usual. A heavy contingent of police officers were called in and attempted to remove the group...Meanwhile, the front doors were locked down...and remained locked as the group left. It appears to have taken several hours for the lock to be removed.

A protest against Canada's continued export of asbestos will be held at the Canadian Embassy in Washington, 6th and Pennsylvania Avenue, on Workers' Memorial Day, Saturday, April 28, 2007, at 2 PM. April 28th is the international day of action on work-related injuries and deaths.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) 125 million people throughout the world are exposed to asbestos in the course of their work, while an estimated 100,000 die each year from asbestos-related diseases. Despite international efforts to block Canada's export of asbestos, the Canadian federal government continues to defend the economic interests of the asbestos industry. Virtually all of Canada's asbestos is exported to developing countries, led by India, Indonesia, and Thailand.

There are, to be sure, significant differences between the torture scandal currently engulfing Ottawa and the one that rocked the Bush administration three years ago. There are no gruesome photos and, unlike the U.S. abuse of Iraqi detainees, the torture in Afghanistan is being done by Canada's local allies.

But in many ways this scandal is equal to the outrage of Abu Ghraib. With the photographic evidence of the abuse in Iraq, even old Donald Rumsfeld could not have pulled the straight-faced performance of Stephen Harper and Gordon O'Connor in the House of Commons this week.
