The (American Library Association), a group representing U.S. librarians that upholds principles of intellectual freedom as part of its mandate, recorded 405 book challenges in 2005 in the United States. Most were formal written complaints to school libraries or public libraries...In Canada, the supporters of Freedom to Read week maintain a record of books that have been challenged. The list includes Agota Kristof's Le Grand Cahier, about two boys in a time of war, which drew a complaint about its graphic violence; and Elizabeth Laird's A Little Piece of Ground, which is about a Palestinian boy.
