Hong Kong, 26 JAN – About 200 gathered in Hong Kong today to continue its long held movement of reuniting Chinese families in Hong Kong. In January 29, 1999, the court of Final Appeal (the highest court in Hong Kong) ruled that mainland Chinese children of Hong Kong residents should be granted the right of abode and residency in Hong Kong to protect families under article 24 of the Basic Law. However, the National People's Congress in Beijing over-ruled the ruling of the Court of Final Appeal in Hong Kong claiming children born in the Mainland may only get right of abode in Hong Kong if one of their parents already had permanent residency in Hong Kong at the time of the child's birth.
