Observers didn't regard conditions and behaviours in Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq as abnormally brutal. That's because they so closely resembled conditions in ordinary supermax prisons in the US...Since April 2003 over 5,000 civilian prison guards have been called up for active military duty and the American Corrections Association estimates the figure could reach 9,000.
