The FARC has once again made itself look like Uribe's government, which also does not want to recognize the Peace Community of San Jose de Apartado and its decision for `active neutrality'." A Socialist Take on Same-Sex Unions Message-ID: <20050501131704.12844.qmail@resist.ca> "For many on the left, the bill marks a significant step forward, clearing the way for queers to be fully accepted into society. Others argue that demanding such acceptance is more accurately viewed as capitulating to the cultural norms and institutions of a patriarchal capitalist society, and a step backward from the sexual radicalism that once characterized the movement for queer liberation. We should be knocking down pillars of the current social order, critics argue, not rapping on the system's doors, asking to be let in. Such a critique is powerful, and has the merit of keeping the broader goals of the movement for radical change in plain sight. It doesn't engage, however, at the level on which the debate is actually occurring." The people, and the land that have been under attack since the arrival of European colonizers. As a regular contributor to this news wire, he has been dedicated to bringing awareness to "Canada's" Indigenous peoples' struggles on issues of sovereignty, resource extraction and environmental devastation. He has brought to light stories that are shaping our history but are simply not given the weight they deserve in other media. Macdonald will combine his love for the north with his love for hitchhiking this summer as he heads out across the Canadian State in an effort to further explore and expose the stories hidden from most people. Message-ID: <20050501151703.19987.qmail@resist.ca> THE EFFORT to win "eight hours for work, eight hours for rest, and eight hours for what we will" became a crusade for U.S. labor in the years after the Civil War of 1861-65. Many people hoped to win shorter hours through reform laws, and by the 1870s, several states and a number of cities had passed eight-hour legislation. But these proved to be empty promises--filled with loopholes and routinely ignored by employers, leaving workers with nowhere to turn to get them enforced. Under the influence of the growing socialist movement in the U.S., labor turned to more militant tactics. "The way to get [the eight-hour day]," Peter McGuire of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners wrote in 1882, "is by organization...We want an enactment by the workingmen themselves that on a given day, eight hours should constitute a day's work, and they ought to enforce it themselves." Well, 'march' is not quite an accurate way to describe the stop-start pattern of our progress. In fact, far better to describe it as a street party, which occasionally lurched forward when streams of marchers coming from other streets lessened: infectious dance music blared from the sound truck leading us, and dancing was occurring throughout the crowd--- most impressively from two older women and a man (occasionally joined by others) in front, who periodically shared the microphone to lead us in chants. The main chant, which everyone happily shouted, was 'Without co-management, you cannot have a revolution!'" The prime minister has risked enormous political capital in boldly going where his predecessors feared to tread: agreeing to evacuate settlements without first wringing something out of the Palestinians." On this latter point the New York Times' editors agree with Sharon's chief rival, Finance Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who condemns "disengagement" on the grounds that it exacts no concessions from the Palestinians. Most of the "pro-Israel" camp in the US is agreed that Israel has taken a significant step towards peace by unilaterally relinquishing Gaza, a step that apparently justifies the Bush-Sharon agreement of April 2004 effectively allowing Israel to annex its largest West Bank settlements, referred to as "major Israeli population centers"." The elders were passionate about defending their traditional lands against those that would sell them off to the highest bidder for the sake of profit. I was skeptical when sent a press release from the Asp camp stating that the issues had been resolved with the support of the elders. Today, the situation has been clarified as the elders have sent out their own relase stating that they are indeed continuing the occupation, and that this "Elders Gathering" was scheduled during a mourning period when they would not be able to attend and did not have their support. Both press releases follow. Speaking in support of the bill's passage at the news conference were Citizenship Minister Dr. Marie Bountrogianni, ODA Committee chair David Lepofsky, and Retail Council of Canada spokesperson Doug Derabbie. There was an important message conveyed not only by their words, but by the very fact of the unity of these representatives of government, business and the ODA Committee, following right after the powerful showing of unity on the floor of the Legislature by the all-party support for this new law. When we identify why we really went to war--not the cover reasons or the rebranded reasons, freedom and democracy, but the real reasons--then we can become more effective anti-war activists. The most effective and strategic way to stop this occupation and prevent future wars is to deny the people who wage these wars their spoils--to make war unprofitable. And we can't do that unless we effectively identify the goals of war. When you think of it, academia is full of Marxist radicals, but only a handful of professed anarchists. The university has survived in much the same form since the middle ages, waging intellectual battles at conferences, re-enforcing class distinctions, making cabalistic decisions in secret rooms. As we stated in our article: 'At the very least, one would imagine being an openly anarchist professor would mean challenging the way universities are run and that, of course, is going to get one in far more trouble than anything one could ever write'...Ironically enough, as if he was testing his own hypothesis, internationally respected anarchist anthropologist, David Graeber, was fired from Yale University a few days ago." Only twenty-four hours after Ecuador's new president took his oath of office, he was hit by a diplomatic cruise missile fired all the way from Lithuania by Condoleezza Rice, then wandering about Eastern Europe spreading "democracy." Condi called for "a constitutional process to get to elections," which came as a bit of a shock to the man who'd already been constitutionally elected, Alfredo Palacio. What had Palacio done to get our Secretary of State's political knickers in a twist? It's the oil--and the bonds. This nation of only 13 million souls at the world's belly button is rich, sitting on 4.4 billion barrels of known oil reserves, and probably much more. Yet 60 percent of its citizens live in brutal poverty; a lucky minority earn the "minimum" wage of $153 a month. a The obvious solution--give the oil money to the Ecuadoreans without money--runs smack up against paragraph III-1 of the World Bank's 2003 Structural Adjustment Program Loan. The diktat is marked "FOR OFFICIAL USE ONLY," which "may not be disclosed" without World Bank authorization. TheNation.com has obtained a copy. As ISP's in developing nations harbor more spammers, those providers increasingly land on international "block lists." That jams up e-mail services for their customers--spammers and regular Web users alike. In countries with a single ISP providing e-mail services, landing on a block list can cut the entire country off from e-mail access. That's just what happened in Costa Rica a few years ago, when antispam campaign group Spamhaus blocked e-mail from the country for two whole days. Nowadays, if a person simply hands you a cup of coffee, from less than a foot away, they glare if you do not tip. My assessment of this is capitalist employers are using 'tips' as a supplement to substandard wages, forcing employees to aggressively panhandle, really, under the guise of 'voluntary tipping.' Another dirty capitalist ploy is advertising something as 'free,' but blocking all entrances to the event with aggressive 'donations' volunteers who literally will not let you enter the event without glares and often a scene, if you actually try to go to the 'free' event without paying.
