I recently talked with a man who had come to live in Canada from Argentina a few years ago. We talked comparing the situations of the two countries and he mentioned the serious corruption of the Agentinian and other Latin American governments. While recognizing that Canada was not perfect, he seemed to think that Canada the good cop to the American bad cop. I mentioned examples of corruption and undemocratic policies such as residential schools, Japanese internment camps, the treatment of peaceful protestors and the sytem of police regulation in which the police investigate themselves. Then today, I saw Murray Dobbin's article in the Tyee which outlined a few more recent examples to add to the list.
