Justice Elizabeth Bennett, a B.C. Supreme Court judge, has ruled that John Graham should be extradited to the United States to stand trial for the 1976 murder of Anna Mae Pictou Aquash. Graham and Pictou Aquash were members of the American Indian Movement (AIM) in the 1970's. Many have pointed to the patently unfair trial of AIM member and now political prisoner Leonard Peltier after himself being extradited to the U.S. from Canada in 1976, as well as to the revelation of campaigns of repression and violence of AIM by the FBI as reasons to deny the United States' request. Just over a year ago, family members of Anna Mae put out a public statement calling for Graham's extradition which prompted rebuttals from others in the Human Rights and Indigenous communities.
