"[Wendy Maxwell Edwards] became known for her outspoken and tireless activism, helping women leave sex work, working with victims of domestic and sexual violence, doing extensive HIV prevention work in the black community and working with gay rights and anti-racist groups. Her writing is scheduled to be published by McGill University and the Canadian AIDS Society in 'A New Look at Heterosexism and Homophobia.' She was also heavily involved in independent media, including hosting shows on a community radio station." "At an event celebrating International Women's Day on March 5 at Ryerson University in Toronto, this came to an end. She was arrested by police while selling cookies at the event, put in immigration detention at the local jail and nine days later deported to Costa Rica, despite public outcry and protests."
