VANCOUVER - Pivot Legal Society is questioning the timing of a newly released study on the Downtown Eastside crackdown by Vancouver police, and its connection to an upcoming budget request by the Vancouver police. The VPD is approaching the City of Vancouver for an extra $5 million to pay for a budget overrun caused, in large part, by costs associated with the crackdown. The City of Vancouver refused to pay for the $2.3 million initiative when approached by police in the spring of 2003.
