GREEN PARTY FILES FULL SLATE
Montréal, Wednesday, 9 June 2004 For the first time in its history, the Green Party of Canada will run a full slate of candidates in Canada's 308 electoral districts for the June 28th election, announced leader Jim Harris today.
Harris was reacting to the news that all 308 Green Party candidates had been approved by Elections Canada, following the close of nominations on Monday.
Since 1867, there have been numerous parties with ambitions to national status running in federal elections. Out of them, only 4 (the Green Party among them) have achieved a full slate.
Ironically, in the 2004 election four parties are running a full slate, but only three of these parties are allowed to participate in the upcoming leaders' debate.
"The Green Party's achievement means that all Canadians from Newfoundland to British Columbia to the North will have an opportunity to join us in building a new political voice in Canada," said Harris. "Canadians who have voted with their couches in the past by choosing none-of-the-above can now vote for a political vision of hope and sustainability."
Harris drew specific attention to the fact that 25 per cent of the party's candidates are women and over 10 per cent are under the age of 25. Three candidates are 18. There are two aboriginal candidates running and one Métis.
