HALIFAX - Former residents of a black community in Halifax that was
razed nearly 40 years ago are still seeking compensation.
"They owe us," said Gloria Grouse, at a reunion on Saturday for former
residents of Africville.
About 80 families were removed in 1967 to end a source of shame for the
city. There was no running water, no sewage system, no garbage pickup,
no public transportation and no paved roads in Africville.
Residents blamed racism for the lack of services.
The Africville Geneology Society has been fighting since 1985 for
recognition of the injustice that was done, and a lawsuit has a been
launched against the municipality.
Politicians are beginning to talk about compensation.
Halifax Mayor Peter Kelly wants to meet with provincial and federal
politicians develop a co-ordinated plan.
"We expect to see some progress really soon," said Barry Barnet, the
provincial minister for African Nova Scotian affairs.
But the three levels of government need "even more commitment" to
resolve the compensation issue, said Irvine Carvery of the Africville
Geneology Society.
"I would like to see an apology be issued," she said.
In March, a draft United Nations draft report said the razing of
Africville deserved compensation.
The community was settled in the early 1800s by black Americans who fled
the U.S. during the war of 1812.
