American Elie Wiesel is a distinguished and well-respected scholar and 
moralist, who is also a Holocaust survivor and former Nobel Laureate.  As 
such, his views on issues of morality and ethics carry a lot of weight. 
However, as Mickey Z. notes below, Wiesel has also been a steadfast apologist 
for Israeli militarism and human rights abuses.  In a recent interview in 
Parade magazine, he opines that "(The U.S.), for two centuries, has stood as a 
living symbol of all that is charitable and decent to victims of injustice 
everywhere...where those who have are taught to give back."
