Recent world events have shown that Canada, as a signatory to the United
Nations, agrees to abide by UN regulations and agreements. Not in B.C.
Recently the International Labour Organization, a body of the UN,
declared that the Gordon Campbell government has violated democratic
labour practices with six different pieces of their legislation.
Furthermore, the ILO has recommended that these six bills be rescinded
or renegotiated.
Campbell's response, to paraphrase, is this: "We tore up, gutted,
imposed and downright smashed legal contracts for the good of patients
and students and to put them first."
Ask any frontline workers -- doctors, nurses, K-12 teachers, college
instructors, social workers -- if their clients are indeed "put first"
by these changes. Does Canada abide by UN regulations or not? Does
Campbell get to pick and choose what labour practices are fair after
putting them through his "new era" filter, thumbing his nose at the UN?
In B.C.'s "race to the bottom," as far as all workers are concerned, I
guess we could change B.C. to mean "Banana Columbia."
