Hi everyone,
I'm starting the research on translations. the company Asiatis told me that it is 45 cents per word for Inuktitut. They don't have a translator for Ilnu.
Written translation would be fairly easy (though it can take time to reach the translator, I was told). We would send a text to the company and then they would send it to the translator, and we would get our quote. I guess there are always added fees + taxes. But at least we'll have an idea of a ballpark figure to go by.
As for a translation in an audio file, well I am told that the translator speaks from the North Basin dialect. The agent at Asiatis asked me where the audio would be aired? What dialect I was looking for? Questions I had no answers for. I guess we'll have to see if this would be worth while for the audio. We'd have to do a lot of getting in contact with radio stations... it may just be good enough to do the following (or at least just start with this):
Send translated texts in Inuktitus, (Ilnu when we find a translator) as well as English and French to all the Native Sisterhoods and Native Brotherhoods and Inmate committees at all the Pens as well as any and all people that we know that go inside the different prisons. (Chaplains, AA / CA folks, other volunteer groups, etc.)
I am still waiting back from another translator company to see what they have in regards to translators for Ilnu and Inuktitut.
What about all the folks in the prairies? Should we have a transaltion in Cree? I know that there are different types of Cree and I'm sure there are even more dialects as well.
The sooner the text is written, the sooner I can start getting more exact info (on prices) for this project.
Dee
