The People v. Kenney
Freedom to move
Right to stay, and to Return
We are many.
Conservative Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism
Jason Kenney is known as the 'Minister of Censorship and Deportation'
because he is one of the most repressive immigration ministers in Canadian
history. Under Kenney, deportations have increased, while the number of
people accepted as refugees and sponsored family members have drastically
dropped. Instead, Kenney has increased the number of temporary workers who
are constantly exploited for their labour.
Kenney is also a staunch supporter of imperial military missions. He
supports the occupation of Afghanistan, has stifled voices opposed to the
war in Iraq and Afghanistan, and has defended the illegal Israeli
occupation of Palestine. Kenney’s neoconservative values are further
obvious in him pulling Canada out of the Durban World Conference Against
Racism; his introduction of a citizenship guide that omitted the rights of
lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and queer (LGBTQ) communities; his defense
of Quebec Bill C-94 that discriminates against women who wear the niqab;
and stating that immigrants are not integrating well into Canada.

Over the past three years, Kenney has been confronted by No One Is Illegal
across the country as we demand: an end to Kenney’s detentions and
deportations, an end to Kenney’s exploitative migrant worker programs, an
end to Kenney’s support for military occupations from Afghanistan to
Palestine, and an end to Kenney’s discrimination against women, LGBTQ,
immigrants & racialized people.

Jason Kenney is a key Minister in Stephen Harper’s Conservative Federal
government. We can unfortunately predict the social, political, and
economic terrain over the next few years under Harper’s reign: more money
for military, police, and prison expansions; corporate tax cuts; lack of
social and environmental protections; and further marginalization of
low-income, Indigenous, refugee, single mother, and working communities.

We do not simply advocate for more humane politicians or more generous
laws. We understand that the Canadian state and its economy are built on
the theft of Indigenous lands; the exploitation of labour, especially
slave, migrant, and reproductive labour; and the global appropriation of
natural resources. We demand an end to detentions and deportations. We
demand the abolition of exploitative temporary worker programs. We demand
status for all those who have been deemed illegal in order to justify
theft of their labour. Instead, we assert the basic principle of
self-determination.
> Why we say “No One Is Illegal, the System Is Illegal”:

We cannot be complicit, silent, or complacent in the face of deepening
austerity, job losses, environmental destruction, military occupations,
and corporate greed. We are rising out of schools, neighbourhoods, and
workplaces to reject Kenney’s and the Tories agenda; join this grassroots
movement and rise up with us!

No One is Illegal-Vancouver Coast Salish Territories is a grassroots
anti-colonial migrant justice group with leadership from members of
migrant and/or racialized backgrounds. We strive and struggle for the
right to remain, the freedom to move, and the right to return. As a
movement for self-determination that challenges the ideology of
immigration controls, we take action to combat racial profiling, detention
and deportation, the national security apparatus, law enforcement
brutality, and exploitative working conditions of migrants. The ongoing
apartheid reality instituted through reserves and sweatshops is one that
must be fundamentally uprooted and transformed. We envision a humanity
where everyone has the right to sustenance and the ability to provide it,
where we are free of oppression, misery, and exploitation, and are able to
live meaningfully in relationship to one another and in reverence for
Mother Earth that sustains us.
