Subject: Help Stop Deportation of Young Woman To Iran (Feb 27th, 8:30am)

Dear VOW Members,
On behalf of No One Is Illegal-Toronto, we are seeking your support for
the case of a young Iranian women's rights activist whose refugee case
has been rejected and is facing a pending deportation order within the
next couple of weeks. Much of her family has already settled in Toronto
and during the past four years she has lived here waiting for a
judgement on her case, she has been very involved in the work against
the implementation of Sharia Law in Ontario, and has been an outspoken
community member in support of women's rights,
particularly for Muslim women. Her refugee case has been rejected and
thus she has been scheduled to be 'removed' from Canada on March 7th
back to Iran. She fears for her safety and life due the advocacy work
in which she has been involved, and no longer has community ties in
Iran. There has been a request by her lawyer to put a stay on her
deportation and her case is to be heard at 9am on Monday, Feb. 27th at a
Toronto Immigration Hearing. We are asking women's groups, community
members, academics, representatives of Muslim organizations, trade
unionists and other supporters to show their solidarity by coming to
the court hearing and attending a press conference to be held at the
court building(330 University Ave.) at 8:30am. In particular, we want
to make a strong statement that this woman should
not be deported, especially given that Canada recognizes that Iran is
indeed a country where human rights, particularly women's rights, are
systematically violated. Her case
demonstrates the sexism and racism embedded within Canada's Refugee
system and the need
for a refugee appeal division. A press release will be sent out soon
with more details. We were hoping that a representative from Voice of
Women would be able to be present not only as a supporter at the press
conference, but also to make a public statement in support of this
young woman. Please let me know whether this is possible. If you have
any questions, please don't hesitate to call me: 416-690-0519. Thank
you.
Sincerely,
Tanya Roberts-Davis
