Subject: Need Help on My Picket Line
Please bounce this to anyone you know in the Lower Mainland.
Sisters, Brothers, and Friends,
I'm writing to appeal for your solidarity on our picket line in the face
of escalating management provocations and pending court actions due to our
refusal to allow the removal of product from behind our picket lines.
My union, CEP Local 1129, has been on strike against the Norampac
papermill in south Burnaby for seven weeks. We are striking for the pulp and
paper industry pattern settlement and against a series of company concession
demands. Of 23 CEP pulp and paper locals in BC, ours is THE ONLY ONE that
has not achieved the pattern settlement.
At 9:30 a.m. Friday, May 28, the company brought a truck into the mill
to load rolls of our paper. Due to an earlier injunction the company
obtained a couple of weeks ago, our picketers delayed the truck only two
minutes, but told the driver if he loaded our rolls, he would not be allowed
to leave the premises.
True to our word the truck is still on the mill site. However we are
facing the probable service of an enforcement order on us early Monday (the
31st). We are advised that failure to comply with the enforcement order
could lead to jailings, fines, and perhaps a more restrictive injunction
against us.
Our members so far are determined to do everything possible to prevent
the company from removing product from behind our picket lines. Please take
an hour or two to come down and boost our numbers and morale. We have only
about 100 members involved in this strike.
To get to our line you have to get to Marine Way which runs parallel to
the Fraser River in south Vancouver and south Burnaby. If you're coming from
the west (Vancouver), go past Boundary Road and Byrne Road, then turn right
on Marshland. Follow it until it turns into Wiggins St., at the end of which
you will find our picket line. If you're coming from the east (New
Westminster), Marshland is the first traffic light after you come down the
s-turn from the Queensborough Bridge.

Solidarity,
Gene McGuckin
