I beg to differ.

Workers should have the right to organize regardless of what field they are
employed in. And how come these staff weren't offered the opportunity to
upgrade themselves to meet the educational/language requirements, rather
than being made to suffer the punitive and destructive experience of being
stripped of their source of livelihood?

That would have been the intelligent and responsible course to pursue, but
it would seem that even within the not-for-profit sector the human beings
whose labour makes the whole shebang run are viewed as expendable and
without inherent worth. This cavalier attitude towards human lives (and life
in general) will ultimately prove our undoing.

If you all do your research, as I advised last time
the CUPE sent out a message about this issue, you
would have learnt that the CUPE is in likely in the
wrong on this issue. The Board decided to fire
workers of the shelter if they didn't meet two
requirements: one, education (ie, not having at least
a bachelors in psychology, social work, or something
of the like), and two, not being bilingual
(considering Yellow Brick House is a shelter for
imigrant women and their children, this is a crucial
requirement). The union refused to let the Board make
this decision, demanding that all present staff remain
employed. Since I personally have a vested interest
into social work matters, and I don't think a union
has any right to decide how a shelter, with limited
funding, is going to do its work. I work at a
shelter, and I think unions have no place in this
field at all.
