[mobglob-discuss] NOW ON TO THE GENERAL STRIKE!

DEAR FRIENDS,

IT TOOK THE HOSPITAL EMPLOYEES UNION [HEU], a union most of whose members
are women, many of them new Canadians, TO FINALLY GIVE US THE OPPORTUNITY TO
JOIN TOGETHER AND FIGHT BACK -- TO BEGIN WHAT CAN BE A REAL RESPONSE TO
THREE YEARS OF BC LIBERAL CARNAGE.

Nothing has changed from the time when workers had to fight for the eight
hour day and the right to organize. It is only when workers organize that
significant benefits are won - and kept - not just for unions but for all
people. It is this we have been forgetting and that we now begin to
remember.

Welcome the remembering and let us not stop until we get the friends of big
money who sit in the legislature to back down!

THIS MEANS WE STAND TOGETHER WITH OUR HEU SISTERS AND BROTHERS AT THE PICKET
LINE DAY IN AND DAY OUT IN DEFENSE OF PUBLIC HEALTH CARE FOR AS LONG AS
NECESSARY.

Picket lines go up at 6 a.m.

THE PUBLIC NEEDS TO BE REMINDED THAT THE SURGERY WAIT LISTS THE MEDIA TALKS
SO MUCH ABOUT NOW WERE THERE BEFORE THE LINES WENT UP AND HAVE BEEN CAUSED
BY THE BC LIBERAL CUTS. In fact, the only hope to shorten them is a
successful HEU strike -- a win that may force the government to reopen
hospitals and rehire skilled staff to work under reasonable working
conditions.

THE PUBLIC NEEDS TO BE REMINDED THAT THIS IS NO ORDINARY STRIKE. This is
the response that BC has been waiting for. This is a strike that has arisen
out of the blows of privatization and ruthless cutbacks in every area
important to ordinary British Columbians.

THIS IS A STRIKE AGAINST A GOVERNMENT THAT HAS BEEN RUSHING TO SELL OFF OUR
PUBLIC SERVICES AND RESOURCES UNETHICALLY, ILLEGALLY AND UNCONSTITUTIONALLY.

Pick up a sign.

TEN MINUTES OR AN HOUR, A GREETING OR A SMILE MEANS A LOT TO WORKERS
WALKING THE LINE.

NO TO LEGISLATION THAT GUARANTEES A 15 PER CENT WAGE CUT OVER TWO
YEARS BUT NO JOB SECURITY. NO TO LEGISLATION THAT CYNICALLY PAVES
THE WAY FOR A COMPLETE TAKEOVER OF OUR HEALTH CARE SYSTEM BY TRANSNATIONAL
CORPORATIONS.

See you there.

FOR VANCOUVER-KINGSWAY NDP,

ALICIA BARSALLO
604-879-3246

VANCOUVER-KINGSWAY NDP
WILL BE JOINING THE HEU PICKETS
AT THE SUNNY HILL HOSPITAL ON 3644 SLOCAN AT E. 21ST, A COUPLE OF BLOCKS
EAST OF NANAIMO.
