- SUPPORT HER WITH YOUR PRESENCE -
Teacher, law graduate, feminist, Alicia is a human rights, civil rights and labour rights activist. She is a political voice who will never abandon those who have the least. Alicia's nomination as a candidate will ensure a clear, strong, and determined alternative to the BC Liberals in this area, and will promote the advancement of a back-to-our-roots approach inside the NDP. Her candidacy will aid the struggle to bring back the activists and the votes lost to the NDP over the last twenty years. Alicia's candidacy will also help to bring to the anti-BC Liberal struggle and the electoral fray, tens of thousands of New Canadians who live in her riding and who have yet to acquire a parliamentary voice.
Alicia's nomination will be that of someone who believes that unions fighting against privatization and for rights that are relevant to us all must not be left alone but defended with active solidarity until they win their fight.
"The BC Liberal agenda is part of a global corporate agenda which aims at privatizing public resources and services: energy, water, health care, education...," said ALICIA BARSALLO, while campaigning during the 2001 election. She was right. The BC Liberals have privatized our health care support services and are auctioning off public resources such as BC Rail, BC Hydro, and the Knowledge Network. Our Medical Services Plan and Pharmacare are next. She also predicted the decimation of our public sector, the underfunding of our social services, and the erosion of our labour rights.
After the BC Liberal victory, Alicia intensified her work against the corporate agenda. In the last three years she has been intensely organizing resistance to BC Liberal measures and working to rebuild the NDP at the heart of our city's struggles.
Following the reception, you are welcome to stay for the Vancouver-Kingsway NDP meeting to select delegates for the BC NDP November 21 to 23 leadership convention. This part will include presentations by leadership Candidates or their representatives at 5 pm.
