Hunger strike against the FTAA to begin October 27th, 2003
Vancouver activists plan continuous campout vigil at the Peace Arch

VANCOUVER - Local activists will hold a press conference at City Hall
at
11:00 a.m. followed by a rally at noon on Oct. 27th, 2003, to protest
the
policies of the FTAA.

Some of the activists will also begin an ongoing hunger strike and
campout at the Peace Arch border crossing. The Vancouver stop FTAA
committee hopes to raise awareness about the issues and pressure local
governments to take a stronger stance in expressing their opposition
to
the agreement.

The activists will also present a set of demands to the government.
The
hunger strike will continue in the weeks leading up to the FTAA
ministerial meeting in Miami on November 20-21.

In recent years, representatives from 34 countries including Canada
have
been working to expand the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA)
to Central America, South America and the Caribbean. The Free Trade
Area
of the Americas (FTAA) is another example of the free-market
fundamentalism that has created a global race-to-the-bottom that
threatens the
environment, families' livelihoods, human rights, and democracy. Once
again, a sweeping "free trade" agreement is in the works that puts
commercial interests above all other values.
