Nature Challenge: improve fuel efficiency standards
Automobiles are one of the largest sources of greenhouse gases and other air pollutants. Raising the fuel efficiency standards of all motor vehicles is an important way to improve air quality.

Our fuel efficiency is getting worse, not better. Did you know a 1912 Model T got 100 kilometres on 6.7 litres of gas, but in the current 2003 Ford line, only one new model gets better mileage?

Send a free fax and let Ottawa know you want cleaner air!

Dear Hon. Herb Dhaliwal,

Although cars are becoming more fuel efficient, light duty trucks (a vehicle category that includes mini vans and SUVs) are allowed to emit more air pollution and greenhouse gases that lead to climate change.

In Canada, auto manufacturers have two separate fuel efficiency standards: for cars it is 8.6 litres/100 km and for light trucks it is 11.4 litres/100 km. These standards allow fuel consumption among light trucks to be 32 percent higher than for cars.

Our children are paying the price. Lax fuel efficiency standards lead to poorer air quality. It's time for the Canadian government to institute one mandatory fuel efficiency standard for all vehicles. An improved standard would reduce air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.

Sincerely,
