101 Ways to Jam the War
From nude peace signs to phone line tie-ups, the war on the warmongers
is on. Street protests were just the beginning, now activists are
getting creative in the push for peace.
How do we make it clear that bullying the world into war is wrong, dead
wrong? And how do we make our demand loud enough so that Blair and Bush
can’t ignore it? Answer: Try a new tactic. You begin war jamming...
What are you going to do? Send us your best anti-war jams and we’ll add
them to the list.
Iraq Body Count
Don’t count on military sources or corporate media to trumpet the true
costs of global conflict. How many innocent people have lost their lives
for an unjust war? Here’s the source for a worldwide update of civilian
casualties in the war on Iraq.
Vote to Impeach Bush
Join the campaign to remove the warmonger from office by constitutional
means. The reason: George Bush is a serious threat to the Constitution
and the rule of law. This grassroots organization has even been
successful in placing a full page ad in the New York Times.
Did Your Car Start This War?
This anti-war jam comes in the form of a billboard liberation. Instead
of the usual ad encouraging mindless consumption, San Francisco's
Fisherman's wharf gets a bold message about the link between fuel
consumption, environmental degradation and war.
Write on the Money
Here’s a classic Brand America jam reinvented with an anti-war twist.
Write your anti-war message on money and imagine it circulating person
to person. A couple of monetary scribbles we like: “Bush is less than
American” or “Bush is not God.”
Change Your $$$ Into Euros
The cumulative value of tens of thousands of people purchasing foreign
currency could have a powerful influence on money markets around the
world. Shake the financial market of the USA and hit Bush where it
hurts. Turn your American money into Euros today - any amount will do!
Excommunicate Bush and Cheney
A campaign initated by Christians working to get Bush and Cheney
excommunicated from their church. If you like the idea, send letters to:
General Board of Church and Society of the
United Methodist Church
100 Maryland Ave. NE
Washington DC 20002
Chalk One Up for Peace
When the USA launches an attack on Iraq, a student organization in Idaho
is planning to send a message to Americans about the death toll of war.
They’ll be littering sidewalks and public spaces all around the state
with chalk outlines of human bodies.
Target: US Media
Here's an idea from Berlin for all those who are fed up with pathetic
media coverage of the US/Iraq conflict. Why not play editor? Cut or copy
the less-than-satisfactory story and send it back to the source. Make
sure to request that it be revised with suggested improvements - and
then reprinted.
Bus(h) Stop
In New Zealand, folks are sticking an 'H' sticker on bus stop signs so
it reads Bush Stop. While local officials have busy been removing
anti-war posters and graffiti, the stop signs are slipping under their
radar.
Students Satirize Military Ad
A student newspaper in Australia used a spoof Department of Defense ad
to tell on-campus military recruiters exactly where to go. Thanks to the
adbust [PDF] and resulting boycotts, the Aussie military is in full
retreat from student media across the country.
Blockades
In Italy, activists are are blocking trains carrying US weapons and
personnel on route to a military base near Pisa. In Germany, England and
Canada, demonstrators are blockading US military bases and US consulates.
Virtual March on Washington
By February 24, 85,000 had already signed up to be a part of the Virtual
March on Washington. The Virtual March is a first-of-its-kind group
effort from the Win Without War coalition. The idea is to direct a
steady stream of phone calls–more than one per minute, all day–to every
Senate office in the US. At the same time, the march will deliver a
constant stream of emails and faxes.
National Moratorium to Stop the War on Iraq
“No school. No work. No business as usual.” That’s the word from the
organizers of the National Moratorium to Stop the War on Iraq. March 5th
is the date for society wide resistance. What that resistance will look
like is your choice.
101 Ways to Stop the War on Iraq
With your pen, your mouse or your mind: here’s a list of things you can
do to keep the peace. The list is compiled by Guy Dauncey, an author
with a positive vision of environmental sustainability.
Rice For Peace
Rice for Peace is a grassroots campaign that gets its meaning from the
Biblical passage, “If your enemies are hungry, feed them”(Romans 12:20).
Send Tony Blair or George Bush a bag of rice with explicit instructions
to send it on to the people of Iraq.
A Bare Witness For Peace
An international get-naked-to-oppose-the-war campaign which involves
arranging a number of bodies into peace symbols and words.
Army of Many
Last week, Chicago high-school students made the advertising firm Leo
Burnett the focus of their protest. The firm designed the youth-targeted
Army of One campaign. The students are concerned that under-funded
Latino and African American schools are overrepresented for military
recruitment.
Disarm Iraq Without War
Join religious leaders in making a strong anti-war statement. Tell
President George Bush, British Prime Minister Tony Blair, and U.N.
Secretary General Kofi Annan that war with Iraq would be illegal,
unwise, and immoral. "Nation shall not lift up sword against nation,
neither shall they learn war any more" (Isaiah 2:4).
Got more war jams? Tell Sadie.
