STUDENTS OCCUPY YORK UNIVERSITY PRESIDENTS OFFICE: CONDEMN STUDENT
ARRESTS
Toronto - Students are currently occupying York University President
Lorna Marsden's office to protest against the universities decision
to use
police force to shut down peaceful protest at York University. As a
result of this decision, two organizers of the student anti-war
protest at York University have been arrested by Toronto Police.
The organizers are members of Now End War and Sanctions On Iraq [NEWS
On Iraq], a member of a coalition of student groups that came
together here at York University to take part in an
international protest against the war. The University Administration
ordered the roads cleared of blockages, and subsequently arrested two
organizers and a picketing student when they didn't clear out fast
enough.
Police have ordered pickets to be taken down at the Sentinel gate,
but students are still holding picket lines at the Main Gate at York
Boulevard
and Keele St.
Students have been holding information pickets at three of the main
entrances to the university, asking them to wait for several minutes
while handing out leaflets and talking to drivers and passengers,
since 7:30am.
Despite some of the worst weather in Southern Ontario all winter,
picket lines have been exuberant and positive, as students
demonstrate that they are opposed to the sanctions and bombing of
Iraq that has caused the deaths of approximately 1.5 million people.
The action is part of a worldwide coordinated effort by students to
intensify the protests against war on Iraq. Hundreds of campuses
across
the U.S., Canada, Australia, Spain, Bulgaria, France, Greece, Brazil
and Scotland (among others) are holding information pickets or
strikes today.
