> Egale Action Update: On to Cabinet!
>
> It was a dramatic end to the week on Parliament Hill in the struggle to
secure equal marriage rights:
>
> 1. Minister's Announcement:
>
> On Thursday, Justice Minister Martin Cauchon said that he would consult
with his Cabinet colleagues at a Cabinet retreat this coming Tuesday, June
17, and would announce as soon as possible thereafter the government's
response to the same-sex marriage judgment.
>
> ACTION ITEM: It is therefore crucial that we connect with the Prime
Minister, the Minister of Justice and other Cabinet Ministers to ask them to
support the Ontario same-sex marriage judgment.
>
> You can write to all Cabinet Ministers simultaneously by sending an e-mail
to:
> cabinet at egale.ca
>
> You can use the salutation "Dear Minister".
>
> You can also contact the Prime Minister and Minister of Justice directly
at the following addresses:
>
> The Rt. Hon. Jean Chrétien, PC, MP
> Prime Minister of Canada
> Ph: 613-992-4211
> Fax: 613-941-6900
> pm at pm.gc.ca
>
> The Hon. Martin Cauchon, PC, MP
> Minister of Justice
> Ph: 613-992-4621
> Fax: 613-995-0114
> Cauchon.M at parl.gc.ca
>
>
> 2. Justice Committee:
>
> Also on Thursday, in a cliffhanger vote, the federal Justice Committee
voted 8-8 on a motion by Svend Robinson to support the Ontario same-sex
marriage judgment, leaving it up to Chair Andy Scott to break the tie in our
favour. Committee Member Derek Lee (who would have voted against the motion
if he had arrived just seconds earlier) entered the room just as the Chair
was casting the deciding vote.
>
> Please let Committee Members know how you felt about their vote. Their
contact details and voting record are set out at the end of this message.
>
>
> 3. End of the session:
>
> On Friday, the House of Commons rose for the summer, a week earlier than
originally scheduled. This works against us on hate propaganda bill C-250
(the final vote will now have to wait until the Fall) and in our favour on
equal marriage (there are no MPs left in Ottawa to make a fuss if the
Minister decides in our favour next week).
>
> IT'S NOT OVER YET, however - please write to Cabinet members NOW at
cabinet at egale.ca!
>
> Best wishes for a Pride season where we all have something to celebrate!
