OLYMPICS FACEOFF 2010
Wednesday, February 12th
7:00 to 8:30 PM
Kino Cafe - 3456 Cambie Street
Vancouvers 2010 Winter Olympics plebiscite is coming up and the kids at
Sudden Death Overtime want to rock the vote with the Olympics Faceoff 2010
at Kino Cafe on February 12th from 7:00 to 8:30 PM.
We want to bring a little fun and a lot of meaning to the upcoming
plebiscite, says event organizer Tamara Neely (no relation to Cam). Its
a big question that people need to take seriously, she says, adding that
the event will help her make up her own mind on how to vote in the
plebiscite. I dont want to go in there myself and make some arbitary,
uninformed choice.
Omar Kassis, another event organizer, expects a lively and focused debate.
Weve got two undefeated teams with some serious star power going head to
head here, he says. The puck drops here!.
The event will follow a modified parliamentary debate format. Unlike the
House of Commons, the debate will be amicable, informative, non-partisan
and, most importantly, invite audience participation, says Kassis.
Chris Shaw, the player coach for No Games 2010 will represent Team No,
while David Podmore, the captain/general manager of Team Yes 2010, will be
wearing the jersey for Team Yes. The two sides will be given ten minutes
to make an opening presentation and five minutes for rebuttals. It will
then be turned over to the audience for questions.
Its not about choosing a winner, says Kassis, its about getting out
an informed vote. Still Kassis does expect a good match and, he adds,
its free, Kino makes good sangria and theres flamenco afterwards.
Olympics Faceoff 2010 is organized by Sudden Death Overtime, a group of
hard-checking urban advocates and young professionals dedicated to keeping
up the level of discussion and debate around urban issues in Vancouver.
The event is part of a wide-ranging, discussion series on things that are
important and good.
