OLYMPIC SOUND BITE #7

PROMISES, PROMISES ...

Promises and projections about Olympic benefits are similar to
election promises - you can choose to believe them if you wish,
but you are likely to be sorely disappointed:

In Calgary none of the low-income housing originally promised was built.

The Salt Lake City Olympic Committee promised to create 2,500 units
of affordable housing. In the end, 150 were built.

Using the same *economic model that B.C. is using, Utah projected
a huge increase in tax revenues and economic spin-offs from the
Salt Lake City Games. The reality? Revenue fell so far short of
predictions that the state has had to slash spending, cut programs,
dip into emergency funding, and may order more employee layoffs.

The Salt Lake City Olympic Committee said they would use almost
1,000 buses to transport athletes and spectators to the venues.
About a year before the Games they changed their minds, citing
logistics and costs, and ended up utilizing 5,000 SUV's instead.
(Vancouver plans to use 700 buses to get folks to Whistler.)

* This Input/Output Model has been called "inaccurate, flawed, and
outdated"
by Dr. Philip Porter, the Sports Economist from Florida State University
who specializes in studying large events like the Olympics and Super
Bowls.
He states it is primarily used by organizations looking for large public
subsidies.
