RE: POTENTIAL BID CORP CONFLICTS OF INTEREST AND DEMANDS FOR DISCLOSURE
NO GAMES spokesperson Chris Shaw again demanded a full disclosure by all
Vancouver-Whistler Olympic Bid Corp directors of any financial holdings
that
might benefit by the Games coming to Vancouver in 2010. "Bid Corp
directors
have a responsibility to the public to ensure that there is no potential
for
any conflicts of interest arising from the Bid. Bid Corp members must
either declare that neither they, their families, nor any of their
business
interests will profit from the Games or they must immediately remove
themselves from the board of directors".
Shaw cited the case of Concert Properties, a major land development and
realty company which has 4 of its current board serving either in the Bid
Corp or on Team 2010, the latter running the Yes campaign. Shaw stated
that, "Mr. Podmore, Mr. Poole, Mr. Tennessy, and Mr. Georgetti need to
make
clear to the citizens of Vancouver and BC that Concert Properties will not
bid on any of Olympic venues". Shaw noted that Concert had previously bid
on
the Convention Centre and has built condos and ski resort facilities, the
same sort of projects that would be required for the Olympics.
Shaw also noted that Bid Corp directors Caleb Chan, Stanley Kwok, and
David
McLean have land and real estate holdings that could benefit from
Vancouver
getting the Games.
NO GAMES also demands the release of all financial statements of the Bid
Corp to enable the public to monitor the expendature of public funds.
Shaw
said, "Most of the money the Bid Corp has used to date comes from the
taxpayer. We have a right to know how our money is being spent, which
companies are getting contracts, and what financial agreements are being
made with our money".
