Nancy Olivieri, David Healy, David Noble - these academic
researchers have become international symbols for the struggle to
preserve the integrity of the university and to protect its prime
mandate to freely conduct research for the public good.

Now that the recent Romanow Report has strengthened the
resolve of Canadians to maintain Health Care as a public system, it
is time to sound the alarm about the widespread erosion of another
essential Canadian institution - the public university.

This two day conference has been designed with the intention
of providing the academic community and the public with a watershed
event in the history of academic freedom in Canada.

It will bring together some of North America's most prominent
researchers and public intellectuals to present the case for the
defence of the university and the promotion of greater links between
academia and society.

Through panel discussions and working groups the conference
will establish the vision and policy groundwork for a new accord
between research and teaching centres and the public interest.
