The Anti-Poverty Committee is calling on all our members, supporters, allies and others concerned about the appalling conditions of homelessness in Vancouver, to come to Thornton Park tommorow, Saturday, August 16 at 11:30 AM to support the homeless in their struggle for housing and social justice.
***PLEASE FORWARD WIDELY TO ALL LISTS & CONTACTS!***
EMERGENCY MOBILIZATION FOR THORNTON PARK TENT CITY - TOMMOROW, SATURDAY AUGUST 16 AT 11:30 AM (North-East Corner of Thornton Park, right near Main Street Skytrain Station & the Bus/Train Terminal).
Today at 10 AM, Justice Pitfield of the BC Supreme Court granted the Parks
Board's request for an interlocutory injunction against the Victory Squat
encampment of homeless people at Thornton Park.
According to the terms of the injunction, all strucutres have to
be removed by 12 noon on Saturday, August 16th. After this deadline, the
Parks Board staff, accompanied by police, will begin dismantling and
removing structures.
Lawyers for the plaintiff had asked that one of the terms of the
injunction be that anyone who interferes with the removal of structures
be charged with contempt of court for violating a Supreme Court
injunction. The reason he gave was that there are provisions under the
criminal code that can be used against people who knowingly defy a court order.
Clearly the COPE (Coalition of "Progressive" Electors)-dominated Park's Board and City Council would rather throw homeless people out of one of the few safe places to sleep in their own community, than assist them in finding decent, affordable housing. So far, all they've offered are platitudes, rooms in run-down SRO (Single-Room Occupancy) hotels, injunctions, disinformation, and contempt for the homeless and their supporters.
The Tent City squatters will be deciding on their next course of action today. The Anti-Poverty Committee is calling on all our members, supporters, allies and others concerned about the appalling conditions of homelessness in Vancouver, to come to Thornton Park tommorow at 11:30 AM to support the homeless in their struggle for housing and social justice.
Our demands remain:
END THE TWO-YEAR WELFARE TIME LIMIT!
SOCIAL HOUSING FOR ALL IN NEED!
MAKE ALl UNITS IN THE WOODWARD'S BUILDING SOCIAL HOUSING!
In Militant Solidarity,
Anti-Poverty Committee

Tim Louis is an Exception
by antipov * Friday August 15, 2003 at 02:27 PM
Of course, congratulations should go to COPE City Councillor Tim Louis who refused to side with the majority political opportunists in the COPE party, voting with the right-wing NPA, in ejecting homeless people from a City park.
Mayor Larry Campbell, Councillors Jim Green and Raymond Louie, Park's Board Chair Heather Deal and all others who voted to use the courts to eject homeless people from a City park, ought to be ashamed of themselves.
