Subject: [G8Plan] Solidarity Village Update
Greetings:
I'm posting this message to clarify what is happening with the planning
of the Solidarity Village. As of this morning, there is not a site
confirmed for the Village. There are lots of stories and rumours
circulating, but here are the facts as of noon, May 15, 2002:
1.A decision was made last week by the SolVil Organizing Committee to
find space for Solidarity Village in Calgary. This decision was made
after it became clear that we could not proceed with the original plan
to have the Village on First Nations land near Kananaskis.
2. Last week many inquiries and tentative bookings were made in and
around Calgary for Solidarity Village space, either in one location or
spread around over various sites.
3. One such request went to the City of Calgary for access to the Shaw
Millennium Park. As there was not enough time to go through the usual
channels with the city, a "fast-track", informal process was used. We
are still going through that process and a final decision has not been
made by the city. We have moved through several stages of the approval
process, but as of today, we do not have a confirmation on the site.
4. As soon as there is a confirmation on the Solidarity Village site, an
announcement will come from the Solidarity Village Organizing Committee.
In solidarity,
