REMINDER !!! - PLEASE DISTRIBUTE !!

The Teddy Bear Brigade is hosting a "First Care First Aid" one-day
training course in Vancouver on June 1. The cost is $ 50.00 per
person. This training is recognized by the Community Care Facilities
Branch of the Ministry of Health, and a certificate valid for 2 years
will be issued to attendees completing the session. A description of
the course is at the bottom of this email.

Course size is limited, and preference will be given to those planning
to attend Kananskis/Calgary in a street medic role, and those who will
be street medics for actions in your own community. If the attendance
list gets too big for one course, we will try our best to host another.
If you need this training and the cost is prohibitive, please let us
know and we will see what we can arrange.

Please reply to teddybearbrigade2002 at yahoo.com to register or if you
have any questions.

The Teddy Bears are planning to host a BCC (Black Cross Collective)
training session before G8. This will cover such things as tear gas,
pepper spray, and other tools that the government may feel compelled to
use against protesters. We will announce the BCC training once things
are confirmed, and it will probably be on short notice.

If you know of any ER doctors who would be interested in coming to
Calgary with the medic team, please let us know ! We are also in need
of medical supply donations, everything from gauze to oxygen. If you
can help us out with supplies, please let us know !

Botkin's First Care First Aid is recognised by the Community Care
Facilities Branch of the Provincial Ministry of Health for staff working
in child-care facilities or with the general public.

The course takes a practical approach in which considerable emphasis is
laid on scene and patient assessment, and on shock and its management. As
required by the Ministry the course includes: adult, child and infant
airway management, choking, artificial respiration and CPR, as well as
head and spinal injuries, unconsciousness, wounds and bleeding, limb
fractures, poisonings, drowning, environmental (heat and cold) injuries,
diabetes, epilepsy, convulsions, allergic reactions, burns, infectious
diseases, fainting and minor wound care (e.g. particles in the eye, use of
plastic stitches, proper record-keeping). I include some work on
"walking" spinals.

As you can see, the work load is heavy. Everyone concerned with first aid
agrees that any initial course covering the essentials should take two
days but, because employers can't spare staff for that long, we have to
cram as much material as possible into one. The course is therefore a
very full 8 hours; coffee and lunch breaks are best kept as short as
possible. The good news is that if people work hard I can get us all
through it together, having some fun in the process and feeling good about
gaining skills that will pay off when someone gets hurt.

Given the vigour of the day students will probably want to wear loose,
comfortable clothing. Dresses may result in people feeling uncomfortable.
You'll want to wear shoes in which you can kneel comfortably to tend
patients without worrying about scuffing the toes. I will bring kneeling
pads to make things easier on people.

I look forward to providing everyone with a course that is interesting,
useful and thoroughly enjoyable.
