Israel urges America not to delay
From Stephen Farrell in Jerusalem
ISRAEL has urged the United States not to delay an
attack on Iraq, adding that it would retaliate if it
was hit by President Saddam Hussein's missiles.
Ariel Sharon, the Israeli Prime Minister, has told
Washington that delaying a military strike would not
create a more convenient environment for action in the
future, a view reinforced by Shimon Peres, the Foreign
Minister.
"Postponing it will surely be more dangerous," Mr
Peres told CNN. "Do they think that if they wait,
Saddam will change? If he does change, it will be for
the worse. He will have more weapons and more
non-conventional weapons."
Mr Peres also repeated threats that Israel would
strike back if hit by Iraq.
The response would be likely to consist of airstrikes
and ground attacks, but Mr Peres refused to rule out
the use of his country's nuclear arsenal. He said that
Israel would only "reluctantly go out of the
conventional domain".
Israel has said that it would respect any decision
taken by Washington. In 1991, it complied with the
White House's request not to retaliate after Saddam
fired 39 Scud missiles at its cities, in the interests
of holding together the coalition.
