According to the e-mail below, posted on the a-infos French news service by
the Rouen group of the Federation Anarchiste, the next G8 Leaders' Summit
will take place in Evian-les-bains at the beginning of June 2003.
According to Frederic Desagneaux, a spokesperson at the Elysee Palace: "The
President of the Republic has chosen the city of Evian-les-bains for its
magnificient location, and because it offers a favourable setting for
reflection for the leaders of state and government [of the G8]. [President
Chirac] is hoping to confirm the return to the "spirit of Rambouillet" that
particularly distinguished the last Summit [in Kananaskis]."
[Rambouillet was the site of the first G6 Summit in 1975.]
Evian-les-bains -- famous for its natural springs -- is 580 km from Paris,
45 km from Geneva, and just across the lake from Lausanne. It has a
population of 7500, and is located in the French Alps, in the Haute-Savoie
region. Marseilles, Nice, Turin, Milan and Genoa are all within a couple
hours driving distance, as are some major cities in Germany like Stuttgart
and Munich.
