Learn about our School pilot project for disengaged High School Students. It
starts in June, right here in your neighborhood! For nearly fourteen years,
GRuB co-founders Blue Peetz and Kim Gaffi have dreamed of starting a GRuB
School modeled on our successful employment program curriculum. Students
often enter our employment program lacking passion for school only to return
a season later focused on their education and personal development. There
are hundreds of youth in our area high schools that could benefit from such
an experience. This summer we are partnering with Olympia High School on a
pilot project to create a “GRuB School’’ model for students who are not
finding success in the traditional classroom setting. Our goal is to then
replicate this model at high schools throughout Thurston County. We hope
you can join us to learn more and find out how you can get involved! For

*11- NOON: "THE ONLY BLACK STUDENT," Author Lull Mengesha, *SPSCC, Student
Union Building, room 119
Lull Mengesha has both a undergraduate and graduate degree from the
University of Washington. As one of the only 3 percent of UW students who
are black, he was aware from very early in his academic career of the unique
challenges students of color face in Predominantly White Institutions, from
what he calls the "Tyrone factor" (being mistaken for every other student of
color on campus) to developing the study habits and social networks students
need to maximize success. Lull became a peer mentor and eventually wrote
down his experiences in his book, "The Only Black Student." He will be at
South Puget Sound Community College to share his experiences with students,
faculty and staff--public is welcome, especially if you are a college bound
student or someone who works with young people headed for higher education!

*3PM: Coal Country A Free Film Screening,* Evergreen, Sem 2, E 1105
Doors at 3 pm, Intro 3:15, Film at 3:30 Followed by short issue briefing
and discussion. COAL COUNTRY is a dramatic look at modern coal mining. We
get to know working miners along with activists who are battling coal
companies in Appalachia. Families have lived in the region for generations,
and most have ancestors who worked in the mines. Everyone shares a deep love
for the land, but MTR (Mountain Top Removal mining which has leveled over
500 Appalachian Mountains) is tearing them apart. We explore meanings behind
promises of “cheap energy.” Join members of the Evergreen MES program and
the Washington Sierra Club for this free event and learn more about how coal
impacts Washington, and what we are doing in our backyard to break our coal
habit and end these destructive mining practices.

The Business Case for Sustainability - One Company’s Journey, with Joyce
LaValle, InterfaceFlor. In 1995 Interface, Inc. adopted “Mission Zero”: By
2020 this petroleum-intensive carpet company would have zero net impact on
the environment - they are 1/2 way there! While reducing net greenhouse gas
emissions by 82% and diverting more 150 million pounds of used carpet from
landfills, they cut costs, increased sales by 2/3 and doubled profits. For
15 years, Ms. LaValle has helped lead Interface’s ascent of “Mt.
Sustainability.” This journey has been incredibly good for business. Joyce
will tell the story, and discuss how local businesses can benefit by
starting on this journey today! Come for the Mini-Expo of Leading Green
Builders! Program begins at 7pm. Please RSVP for Catered Buffet (email or

“5 Week Foundations of Nonviolent Communication” Join us to strengthen your
NVC fluency and understanding in order to treat yourself and others more in
alignment with your heart. NVC is simple to teach and learn and it is very
difficult to put into practice because it requires that we change our

*7PM: THE FLAPPER (1920) Director Alan Crosland, *The Washington Center, 512
Washington St SE, Tickets: $9.75 - $17.50 + $2.50 Fee
Whenever we hear "flapper girl", we all think of the head-turningly
beautiful, wise-cracking Jazz Age lass with the bobbed hair who's the life
of the party -- but before the popularization of that image, there was The
Flapper, the film that started it all, featuring of the most popular star of
the 1920’s (but an elusive name to us now,) Olive Thomas. Written by
influential female screenwriter Frances Marion, the story follows a teenage
girl cursed with being full of life in a Footloose-style morally restrictive
Florida town.

a telephone call no parent should ever have to receive. What they heard
changed their lives forever. Their eldest son, Matthew, was in a coma after
having been brutally attacked—because he was gay. The distraught parents
flew to Ft. Collins, Colorado, and met-up with their youngest son, Logan, to
visit Matthew in the hospital. On October 12, Matthew passed away.
*7:30PM: Marcia Ball and the Voice of Wetlands Allstars, *Washington Center,
512 Washington St SE, $18.25 - $44.50
Featuring Tab Benoit, Cyril Neville, Anders Osborne, Johnny Sansone, Waylon
Thibodeaux, and Big Chief Monk Boudreaux. Over the course of her
three-decade plus career, Marcia Ball has developed a large and enthusiastic
fan base with her smoldering blend of swampy R&B, high energy blues and
heart-wrenching ballads. The Voice of the Wetlands Allstars were founded in
2005 when some of Louisiana's most prominent musicians got together and
produced a benefit CD for the Voice of the Wetlands non-profit organization.
The loss of South Louisiana's wetlands is a serious environmental problem,
contributes to the loss of the musicians' unique culture, heritage and
livelihood and was made even worse by the destruction from Hurricane
Katrina. This will be a rousing good time!

Detention Center, which was built on a superfund toxic waste site near
downtown Tacoma. Carpool to leave Olympia at 11am from the Olympia-Rafah
Solidarity Mural at Capitol and State, and will return to Oly by around 5pm.
The NWDC houses up to 1500 detainees and is run by GEO Group, a for-profit
corporation that consumes $150,000 of taxpayers' taxes each night that it's
full. Prisons and detention centers are a bizarre growth industry in the US!
Come bring coffee and food to support families that are visiting their
locked-up loved ones and protest a failed immigration policy.
Emailbridgesnotwalls at riseup.net or call (503) 970-3399 by Friday for more
information on what to bring (and what not to bring).

Washington DC: Clearly the US is at a crossroads. Down one road lies
permanent war, a stagnant economy and loss of liberty. Down the other lies
a new world of cooperation, prosperity and freedom. The Latin America
Solidarity Coalition and School of the Americas Watch share with the vast
majority of Latin Americans and people of the world the desire to travel on
the road to a new and better world. They invite people to help them plan a
conference to bring together Latin America solidarity activists, people of
faith, academics, youth and students, anti-war activists, labor, women, and
