BCGEU members gear up for 2006 negotiations
Delegates representing nearly 50,000 public sector workers, members of
the B.C. Government and Service Employees' Union, will meet this week in
Burnaby to set priorities for 2006 contract negotiations.
George Heyman, BCGEU president, will address the opening session of
two-day bargaining conferences involving BCGEU members in the provincial
government, health, community social services and highways, bridge and
road maintenance sectors. The opening session only is open to the
media.
Mr. Heyman is scheduled to speak:

Collective agreements expiring in 2006 cover BCGEU members in these
sectors:
* approximately 25,000 BCGEU members in the provincial public
service, ranging from liquor store clerks and correctional officers to
child protection social workers, forestry and environmental protection
workers and administrative workers;
* approximately 10,000 members in the community health sector,
such as home support workers, long-term care aides and paramedical
professionals like speech therapists and lab technicians;
* approximately 10,000 members in the community social services
sector, such as residential care aides for adults with disabilities,
early childhood educators, and community workers in aboriginal services
and women's services; and
* approximately 1,500 highways, road and bridge maintenance
workers.
