From newswire at news.bc.ndp.ca Thu Nov 3 18:11:16 2005 From: newswire at news.bc.ndp.ca (BC NDP NEWSWIRE) Date: Thu, 3 Nov 2005 18:11:16 -0800 Subject: [LabComm] James introduces campaign finance reform bill Message-ID: James introduces campaign finance reform bill New Act puts individual British Columbians at the centre of political process VICTORIA - NDP Leader Carole James today tabled a campaign finance reform bill that puts individual British Columbians at the centre of the political process by fundamentally changing the way political parties in BC are financed. "The principle of this bill is simple: every British Columbian should have equal access to legislators and input on the decisions that affect their lives," said James. "By limiting campaign contributions to individuals, this bill will take big money out of BC politics, improve our democracy, and contribute to public confidence in British Columbia's democratic institutions." James said the perception that political parties are beholden to big campaign contributors is undermining trust in the political process and political institutions. "British Columbians believe passionately in our democracy and they expect more accountability from their elected representatives," said James. "They expect that every decision made results from no other consideration than the broad public interest. This bill helps improve our democracy by ensuring that individual citizens don't get pushed aside by big institutions in the political process." James said that in addition to these far-reaching reforms, the NDP bill also calls for a comprehensive review of the way the political process is financed in BC. Led by the Chief Electoral Officer, the review will provide a detailed examination of the entire campaign finance system and make recommendation on issues like third party-advertising and the public finance system established in the Canadian Parliament. "I hope that the BC Liberal government will put aside partisan politics and take up this opportunity to introduce these important reforms - reforms that represent a fundamental shift in our democracy back to individual citizens." Serious concerns have been expressed about the process we took to arrive at the decision to increase MLA salaries, pensions and the resources to serve constituents. In politics it's important to listen. That's why I am asking the government to withhold Royal Assent and Proclamation of Bill 17. I am also calling for the full package to be referred to an independent panel for full public review and input with a report to the legislature in the spring. I entered public life to do politics differently, to help re-establish faith in our democratic institutions and to provide new leadership and a new tone to the public dialogue. The NDP Caucus takes full responsibility for failing to meet that standard on this issue. And that's why we are taking this action today." -30- To unsubscribe or change your settings go to: http://www.e-2ve6y.signup2.bc.ndp.ca/ -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... And we can all be proud. But, friends, we cannot be complacent. We must engage the future. Because the future is a fundamental part of our tradition. We are a young political movement born in the midst of the turbulent twentieth century. Born in response to the great challenges of the time, with a progressive vision, innovative and courageous. One that held broad social inclusion at its heart. Ours is a proud history. And as we've always done, we must face our future with confidence and conviction. Because British Columbia is changing fast. And New Democrats are responding. Forging a new politics, applying our values in a world very different from the world in which our party was born."
