LAIDLAW EDUCATION SERVICES DRIVERS
JOIN UNITED STEELWORKERS
THUNDER BAY, ON - United Steelworkers' Ontario/Atlantic Director Wayne
Fraser announced Wednesday that a group of 125 school bus drivers and
mechanics, employees of Laidlaw Education Services in Thunder Bay, have been
certified as members of the Steelworkers' union.
Laidlaw Education Services is part of Laidlaw Inc., and is North America's
largest education transportation contractor.
Fraser said work can now begin on negotiating a first collective agreement.
Another group of Laidlaw drivers and mechanics in Amherst, NS, are also
members of the United Steelworkers, who last fall negotiated a new contract
containing retroactive wage increases and a further series of increases over
three years, along with improvements in working conditions.
"These workers do an important job in our communities," Fraser said.
"Joining the Steelworkers is a step in building better jobs and more
respect."
The United Steelworkers represents about 180,000 men and women working in
every sector of Canada's economy.
