I would greatly appreciate your assistance in publishing -- in your

encouraging people to buy their Christmas cheer from unionized stores.
Thanks in advance for any help you can give!

Hi everyone.
I would love to be getting electronic versions of the BC Fed news
releases when they are issued. Same for the op eds that are done and
sent to community papers. Can they be sent via our labour communicators
list? Cheers, Roseanne.

Subject: [LabComm] LAIDLAW DRIVERS JOIN STEELWORKERS

10 DECEMBER 2003
LAIDLAW EDUCATION SERVICES DRIVERS
JOIN UNITED STEELWORKERS
THUNDER BAY, ON - United Steelworkers' Ontario/Atlantic Director Wayne
Fraser announced Wednesday that a group of 125 school bus drivers and
mechanics, employees of Laidlaw Education Services in Thunder Bay, have been
certified as members of the Steelworkers' union.
Laidlaw Education Services is part of Laidlaw Inc., and is North America's
largest education transportation contractor.
Fraser said work can now begin on negotiating a first collective agreement.
Another group of Laidlaw drivers and mechanics in Amherst, NS, are also
members of the United Steelworkers, who last fall negotiated a new contract
containing retroactive wage increases and a further series of increases over
three years, along with improvements in working conditions.
"These workers do an important job in our communities," Fraser said.
"Joining the Steelworkers is a step in building better jobs and more
respect."
The United Steelworkers represents about 180,000 men and women working in
every sector of Canada's economy.

Subject: [LabComm] APPLICATION FILED TO REPRESENT CN TRACK WORKERS
Message-ID: <91346DA0CE2D3D4BB91798469DA081E810CF63@uswa.ca>
12 DECEMBER 2003
UNITED STEELWORKERS
APPLY TO REPRESENT CANADIAN NATIONAL RAILWAY
COMPANY (CN) TRACK WORKERS
TORONTO - United Steelworkers National Director Lawrence McBrearty
announced Friday that, following a card-signing campaign, the union has
filed an application for certification with the Canada Industrial Relations
Board (CIRB) on behalf of about 3,000 employees of the Canadian National
Railway Company (CN).
The employees maintain and repair CN's track system across Canada. It is
now up to the CIRB to determine whether a representation vote will be held.
"We feel confident that the CIRB will uphold the choice of the majority of
the CN workers who signed Steelworker union cards," McBrearty said, adding
that the United Steelworkers already represents CN employees who work as
rail traffic controllers.
McBrearty said the union expects to file an application soon to also
represent track workers at Canadian Pacific Railway (CP). At CP, about 1,500
Steelworker members are crew dispatchers, operators of intermodal terminals,
storespersons, accounting centre staff and freight claims adjusters.
"We are already a significant player in the transportation sector," said
McBrearty. "In the late '90s, our union merged with the 5,000-member, former
Canadian section of the Transportation Communications Union. We look
forward to welcoming the 3,000 CN workers into our union."
The United Steelworkers represents about 180,000 men and women working in
every sector of Canada's economy.
CN's rail links span the continent.

Subject: [LabComm] WESTRAY SURVIVOR TO GET $101,000 COMPENSATION
Message-ID: <91346DA0CE2D3D4BB91798469DA081E810CF6C@uswa.ca>
15 DECEMBER 2003
UNITED STEELWORKERS WIN COMPENSATION
FOR WESTRAY SURVIVOR
TORONTO - United Steelworkers National Director Lawrence McBrearty
announced Monday that the union has won a compensation claim for a former
Westray miner who was so disadvantaged that he was forced to pawn the medal
he received for his part in the attempt to rescue the 26 miners killed in
the 1992 Westray mine explosion.
"The worker, a lifelong miner, had been cut off compensation for
post-traumatic stress and had been unable to work," said McBrearty. "He was
plagued with thoughts about what he saw underground in the rescue attempt."
McBrearty said the union took up his case before the Nova Scotia
Compensation Board, which now will pay the worker a total of $101,000 and,
beginning in January, he will receive a monthly benefit of $675.
The United Steelworkers has been involved with Westray since before the
explosion in May, 1992. Workers concerned about safety in the mine were
signing Steelworker union cards in the months before the disaster. The
union went on to fight for changes to the Criminal Code to make corporate
directors and executives criminally accountable for workplace health and
safety. Those changes were finally passed into law in November.
"The effects of that 1992 explosion continue to be felt by survivors and the
men who were involved in the mine rescue," McBrearty said. "Westray is as
much a part of the life of our union as it is for them."
The United Steelworkers represents about 180,000 men and women working in
every sector of Canada's economy.

Subject: [LabComm] TALKS SCHEDULED AT RMS TO TRY AND END TWO-AND-A-HALF YEAR
STRIKE
Message-ID: <91346DA0CE2D3D4BB91798469DA081E810CF7A@uswa.ca>
18 DECEMBER 2003
United Steelworkers and RMS Equipment Company:
TALKS SCHEDULED TO TRY AND END
TWO-AND-A-HALF-YEAR STRIKE
KITCHENER, ON -- Following communication from the United
Steelworkers to RMS Equipment Company in Kitchener, talks have been
scheduled in an attempt to end a strike that began on May 14, 2001.
Collective bargaining will resume with exploratory talks in early February
2004.
"We have kept up the pressure on RMS since our members chose to exercise
their right to strike," said Steelworkers' Ontario Director Wayne Fraser.
"Since the start of this dispute, we have provided support in terms of
strike pay and by targeting RMS's corporate parent in the United States.
These talks are a result of the pressure we have sustained for over two and
half years. We'll keep that pressure on as long as it takes.
"We are glad that RMS has responded positively to our request to re-start
the talks," Fraser added. "We are ready to try and resolve this dispute. We
hope that RMS comes to the table ready to work hard."
"Our members in the Kitchener-Waterloo region have stayed strong. Not one
has crossed that picket line," said Peter Cook, president of the
Steelworkers' Local 80. "I was at the table when bargaining broke off in
2001. I am ready to get back into bargaining."
RMS is part of the Pettibone Tire Equipment Group, which is in turn owned by
the Chicago-based Heico Companies LLC.
The United Steelworkers represents about 180,000 men and women working in
every sector of Canada's economy.
