This bounced from getting to you all 'cos Stephen's not on the list. But
here's his response so you're all in the loop. I haven't responded to him
yet.

Hi Gil,
Thanks! Yes, things are still nebulous! In part I was hoping the
participants in the discussion could shape it as an event. The participants
so far are myself, Natalie Knight (an indigenous graduate student at SFU),
and January First. I'm also trying to get someone from the social housing
group. I might speak about capitalism and extraction. Natalie might speak
about indigenous feminism. And you mentioned before something about
trade/trade agreements. So one way to proceed would be for each of us to
make a short opening statement (maybe 10 minutes?), and then have a
discussion (maybe based on a few questions we come up with?) - involving
the audience too - about the specific ways these aspects of capitalism are
currently being resisted.
But this is as far as I've gone! If you want some more detail, I will work
on that for sure. Or if you are comfortable co-creating the event
collectively, perhaps we can meet as participants soon and hammer out a few
more details. OK?
Thanks and solidarity,
Stephen

Hi Stephen,
Everyone at our meeting was happy that you invited us to be part of this,
and so we're on board. However, it seemed a bit hard for us to come up with
a plan of exactly what/how to do this since we felt the details were still
a bit too nebulous :-p
So, have you defined more what is sort of the slot you have for us? If
possible, we'd like to know what day and time we are doing this, and how
long we have for our part. And if you've managed to narrow down some more
details, like who else is participating and what are they focusing on, we'd
love to know.
We're sure it'll turn out great regardless, but if we have a bit more
clarity we can make sure we come better prepared.
Thanks again!

Hi Gil,
Great - and thanks!
The idea was a panel, though we could maybe play loosely with that idea if
you wanted to. As for ideas, it would be great if you talked about trade -
everything you say here sounds interesting. NAFTA to TPP? What they have in
common/what they all result in (as far an environment, indigenous and
migrants rights, etc.) - all would be interesting.
Let me know after your meeting on Tuesday.

Hi Stephen,
Thanks for contacting us!
Peter from Rising Tide had already mentioned you would get in touch about
this, so I've passed it on to our Jan. 1st Collective list, and we'll
discuss it at our meeting on Tuesday. I would tentatively say yes!, but I
also want to check-in with the rest of the crew in case we can do it more
collectively.
So, assuming we'll do it, wearing perhaps many hats (Jan. 1st, cipovan,
etc.), I was wondering if you have more ideas about how to do this. I think
it was a panel, so that rules out trying to play a game or some other
"workshopy" activity right?
As for our approach (not necessarily methodology), we're trying to make
sure we talk about trade as one of the most visible faces of capitalism and
-without glossing over it- we try to not get stuck completely on the nitty
gritty of specific trade agreements. The idea that "once you know a trade
agreement you know them all" is sort of what we are hoping people can see,
so that we can move on to find the specific links between free trade and
environmental justice, or indigenous rights, migrants' dignity, or whatever
issue people are really focused on. And hopefully this leads to a
discussion of how can we build strong, interconnected movements that focus
as much as possible on the root causes?
Alright, I don't mean to pour over a lot of stuff on you, but hopefully
some of this makes sense.
Talk to you later!

Hi Gil and Alexandra,
I'm putting together a panel to talk about capitalism/anti-capitalism at
the Rising Tide training weekend, April 4-6. Would either of you be
interested? This is wide open right now, as far as what we might discuss.
I'm mostly working on anti-capitalist struggles as they intersect with
resource extraction, and would likely talk to that in some way. Are you
interested, and any ideas as to how you might want to approach the topic?
Solidarity,
Stephen
