Hi all,
I'm sending below an adaptation of what Alex drafted for the thank you note
+ invitation to Dec. 17. Thanks a lot for making it btw!
However, I haven't sent it because as I was adding the link to the EZLN's
silent march video (which you should watch btw!), I wondered if we're being
too hasty on calling an event like this as "our own" and not having had the
time to really build it with people who are interested. So, *check the
underlined text below*, where I change it from "it will be X" to "it could
be X, but we'll define that with you if you come"
Also, I think we should talk on our next meeting about our plans to do
"outreach" and what does that mean exactly, as I think we have to start
having more of a collective identity. For example, I'd propose that we can
organize targets (organizations, unions, etc.) to visit as delegates (we
can accompany each other whenever possible) and invite them to the Jan.
1st, 2014 demo, and sort of present ourselves as part of the collective and
request the chance to keep talking and hopefully work together on the demo
and other things after it.
I just worry that the people who should be marching with us (students,
workers, families, people who use transit, indigenous peoples, migrants,
etc.) perhaps won't get the chance to know this is happening as it's so
soon, though I understand they may see a video or facebook post afterwards
and go "hey! that's cool! I'll get in touch".
Hope I didn't bore you too much! haha

Hi everyone,
First of all, we want to give you a huge thank you for coming out to our
November 20th event. We hope hearing from Cease Wyss, Miguel Alvarez and
Feliciano Valencia was helpful and insightful, and, based on the really
excellent discussion that followed, we get the feeling we're on to
something :-)
And also thank you for signing up to our (for now small) list to receive
information. We promise we will only spam you with interesting news of
events and activities, so please don't delete us just yet!
To start off, here are two dates we'd like you to mark on your calendars
and help us publicize.
Thanks again and see you soon!
January 1st Collective
*1. January 1st, 2014*
Two decades have passed since NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement)
came into effect, on January 1st, 1994. This was also the day that the EZLN
(Ejercito Zapatista de Liberacion Nacional) of Chiapas, Mexico, chose to
say "Ya basta!" (Enough!) and took up arms against the Mexican State.
In honour of their struggle, as well as that of millions of people who have
had to endure 20 years of trade agreements, we invite you to join this January
1, 2014 to celebrate that we’re still here, resisting and re-building our
communities. The 20 Years of NAFTA, 20 Years of Resistance march will begin
at 2pm at Waterfront Station.
*This will be a quick demo and march where we hope you will help us send a
clear and vibrant message of pride and resistance. We invite you to watch
this video for insipiration (where the EZLN marched silently in San
Cristobal de las Casa, Chiapas on December 21,
2012): http://youtu.be/TVIVi4gs0QY <http://youtu.be/TVIVi4gs0QY>, and
invite you to join us on Dec. 17, 2013 (info below) to make signs and
materials, and help us define the shape this event will take.*

*2. Prop-making and potluck discussion*
Join us on December 17 at 6 PM, at Grandview Church, 1803 1st Ave E, for an
evening of *sign-making, shared food and discussion* as we work in
preparation for the January 1st Day of Action.
Feel free to bring materials (paint, brushes, markers, fabric, wood,
cardboard, etc.) food to share (though we will make some) and, most
importantly, your skills and ideas to plan the event and make props!
