Message-ID: <4B42D1D5.8080902@webbedfeet.co.za> Whose up for a meeting on Sunday? About 11am? To discuss the RRFM and other issues. And here's a quote I liked, illustrating what I think we were trying to get at with the RRFM: "I live with animals and plants. It is my practice and lifestyle to grow, forage preserve food, make medicine and build soil. This practice of mine is an economy in and of itself. It sustains me and I am also able to use it to create other economies that create other relationships with people and sometimes ones that pay the bills. I use aesthetic strategies to illuminate and frame this lifestyle." (from http://www.arthurmag.com/2010/01/04/embody-your-economies/) An economy isn't just about money, or "production, distribution and consumption of goods and services" (from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economic_system) - its about the organisation of time, and thus labour, and of relationships - with each other, with the soil and the planet and its animals and plants. And ultimately it *should* be about building healthy relationships, in the realisation that all the lives on our planet are interdependent (so an economy relies on an ecology). In a healthy economy, paying the bills is just one thing to worry about - yet I sense that it is precisely the anxiety of bills that feeds into the anxiety around matters economic, the anxiety that even infected the RRFM (with concerns about stickers for goods taken, concerns about the presence of "bergies", etc). Anyway, a bit of the shit that we discussed: 1. No feed back from the Evolver people yet, but Andreas will try and get in touch again. 2. RRFM: Please, no wind next time, ok? Seriously though, Cape Town / Muizenberg's wind gets a bit better after January, so we should be in luck. So: a) Production: We'd like to see more activities, not just people bringing stuff. People exchanging stuff don't "connect" very much, but activities can draw people in (like Meghan's art stuff, James & co's music, the volcano). Then the RRFM can be a space to produce stuff (not necessarily material stuff - also ideas, memories, relationships between people) b) Info: need to produce more info for people - maybe have a RRFM "info desk" at the next market. c) Zine: we could have an "In Your Face" zine that we distribute at the RRFM to spread ideas / experiences. d) Register: next time we need to remember to make a register for those who attend e) Shelter from the elements: Let people know we're looking for tents and shelters of all kinds. Also there's a venue in Vrygrond (the Pink Church) which is available for cheap (R 50 or so) and comes with parking too. And from March-ish there should be a community centre in Vrygrond we could use too. f) Date: If we hear from the Evolver people we can do something with them, else aim for the 7th of Feb as the next RRFM. 3. Future Vrygrond Dance Group - Talent show: Lettie mentioned that they want to hold a Talent Show / Fundraiser at the end of Feb and are looking for judges for this. This will involve dance, acting, poetry and singing. 4. Computer project in Vrygrond: Via one of Lettie's comrades there's apparently a big computer donation heading Vrygrond way. She's looking for people to help set them up and teach skills - we await further details. Next meeting: Sunday 24th Jan - Mandy's house. P.S. apols for being a bit grumpy this Sunday... Great, this will also amp us on to do the little things we initially spoke about like shedding light on the stupid by-laws that rule out city. We will have lots of fun with 2010 here and effing fifa. e) Shelter from the elements: Let people know we're looking for tents and shelters of all kinds. Also there's a venue in Vrygrond (the Pink Church) which is available for cheap (R 50 or so) and comes with parking too. And from March-ish there should be a community centre in Vrygrond we could use too. I vote for the venue in Vrygrond. It seems more reliable and practical. Im not sure the windy mznbrg stretch is the best way to go, although it's pretty, it's just too elemental for something like this. 4. Computer project in Vrygrond: Via one of Lettie's comrades there's apparently a big computer donation heading Vrygrond way. She's looking for people to help set them up and teach skills - we await further details. I would be willing to get involved in a few days teaching things I know, which are more Photoshop and creative suites, but I know a little about Word and such things too. I'm thinking it's only basics that are required, like setting up a CV and learning Word etc. If that is the case I could ask others as well if they have spare time. Pitty we did not know you were here would have been nice to meet and chat - hope you had a good stay in CT although July is not the best time weather wise. At the moment we would not be in a position to start job site organising, we think this would develop as things got going. Our group, called In Your Face (IYF) is a mixture of Anarchist and autonomists, it started last year when I moved to Cape Town with an anti Election campaign entitled NOPE, with the slogan 'our dreams don't fit on your ballots' and has moved on to running a really really free market every month and plans to start basic economics training and run seminars and film screenings. I am a supporter of Zabalaza, a South African Anarchist group and before that was part of Bekisha Media Cooperative with Nicole Ulrich, Lucien Van der Walt and Michael Smidt and we all met comrades from IWW when we went to the May 2000 CNT Pour un Autre Futur Rallye in Paris. I have also worked in the union movement, specificaly with COSATU in various capacities (mostly Training and research) since 1993 - although do not any more, so I do have some skills which can provide support. Our group is made up primarily of workers in NGO's and some unemployed people but we would very much like to belong to a union. In the past I have both worked for and been a member of COSATU but as you know COSATU is very much a Nationalist union particularly since 1994 with its alliance with the ANC and SACP, it has also, lost a lot of its working class focus and shopfloor strenghth, choosing to follow a more corpratist model of unionism. These are issues with us and the main reason why we would not like to join COSATU. IYF tasked me to look into the possiblity of getting an IWW Chapter set up here and we would need to discuss this in our group a bit more but the idea of starting an IWW here comes, firstly from my belief in the model and principles of IWW, which my comrades share. We also think that our really really free markets would be a good place to begin recruitment campaigns. Our group is small at the moment and getting things going would take a lot of work, so recruiting, we think would be an important innitial step to build numbers and thus capacity. In terms of what we would like to accomplish, we would like, for ourselves andother workers, to have a union that supports and provides space for libeterian thought and practice, one which is not linked to any politial party, one that REALLY challenges the Capitalist State and Capital but first and foremost one that organises, supports and empowers workers to engage with the problems and challenges they face on a daily basis in their workplace and their lives. This is the aspect which will require, at least innitially a lot of time and support in terms of training and providing knowledge of labour laws etc. Sorry if this is a bit broad, vague, verbose and structureless. I think from here I would need to sit down and have a proper conversation, so that we can develop a more formal plan and idea. anyway hope this helps. She would like one (or more) of us to give an informal talk about the RRFM - why we're doing it, what the motivation is etc. Any volunteers for that? I'll create a Facebook event for this tomorrow and we can start to spread the word. Below is the email Gizelle sent out to the evolver crowd. Developing our perspectives and approach for taking forward the CDL towards a united front against poverty and capitalism. (Group discussions/commissions ? see discussion questions below) 5. Finance and contributions. 6. W/Cape preparations for national meeting. 7. Way forward and next meeting. *Discussion Questions:* Read the minutes of the previous meeting workshop held on 16 December 2009 and discuss the following: 1. What key dangers facing the working class at this time? 1. What are the most important issues to organise mass campaigns around? 1. How do we proceed after this meeting to work together in taking forward the campaign for a mass orientation of the CDL ? What is to be done? 1. Are we directly developing a political formation? How does our mass campaigning around issues identified relate to this? 1. The CDL is launching a united body of different and autonomous organisations and lots of individuals ? many without direct links to working class formations or communities. How should this be internally organised? 1. Should this united body participate in the 2011 local elections and on what political basis? Please confirm your attendance by not later than Wednesday 20th January. Yours in solidarity. We thought if we could do A5, save paper and printing costs that would probably work best. Now that I have bashed something out, if everyone thinks its okay, I thought we could do the text on one side and the quotes the other. So back to back 4 A5 pamphlets per page....? Okay, so below is the text - it's draft and you will see interms of the quotes based on my personal favourite... Please change add etc... I will not be able to comment until I get back, so I think you guys should bash it out and go ahead with final version. Here it is: What is the Really Really Free Market? The Really Really Free Market (RRFM) is a space where we honour the value of eachother. It is an anti-capitalist space where value is not about what you own, earn or contribute to the great machine of capitalism. It is where value is in sharing the riches of each individual who chooses to join our free market. A market without money, without exchange, without a boss. Where the collective of everyone who takes part freely and without constraint, other than the respect of each other, is what drives it. The RRFM is the living embodiment of what we as free people of the world can do without a state, without money, without exploitation and without capitalism. ?In our civilised societies we are rich. Why then are the many poor? Why this painful drudgery for the masses?... This rich endowment, painfully won, builded, fashioned, or invented by our ancestors, must become common property, so that the collective interests of men [and women] may gain from it the greatest good of all... The well being of all... All is for all!? ?In working to put an end to the division between master and slave we work for the happiness of both, for the happiness of humanity.?
