Meghan, I'm cutting and pasting the text I thought I'd use for the Facebook group below. Andreas The Really Really Free Market Nothing is free these days, right!? Everything has a price tag and money rules the planet, right!? Wrong! Like the best things in life - friendship, community and mutual aid - the Really Really Free Market is, well, really, really, 100% free. The first ever Really Really Free Market in Cape Town will be held at Zandvlei in Muizenberg (see directions and map below) on Sunday 15 November from 1pm to 5pm. What is it? The Really Really Free Market is a community event where people get together and share useable items, art, food, performance, music, skills, stories and whatever else we can enjoy together. It?s 100% free, non-commercial and organised by the participants themselves, including you. Everyone brings something - even if it?s just a sense of humour - and leaves with so much more! Everyone is welcome and encouraged to give, receive, and create, so bring your kids and the whole family. The Really Really Free Market is a celebration of the cooperation and gift-giving that make life possible beyond the constraints of capitalist markets. ? At the Really Really Free Market there is no trading and no bartering, just gifts. No money changes hands, no one haggles over the comparative worth of items or services, nobody is ashamed about being in need. ? So it?s not strictly speaking a ?market? at all then, is it? Correct, we?re just poking a bit of fun at anyone who still has faith in the so-called free market, when it?s so obvious that that?s just a blatant contradiction in terms. ? There will be: food, music, a treasure hunt, toys, plant seedlings, pamphlets, CDs and more. ? How? ? ? Bring useful items that you no longer need or want to share freely with other members of your community. Browse through the things others have brought and leave with what your family needs, regardless of whether you brought something or not. ? ? Bring your talents, creativity, skills, ideas and smiles and give something of yourself:? music, poetry, storytelling, lessons.?Or bring your unique service or expertise to share with others: haircuts, painting, juggling, knitting, etc. ? ? Bring some food and share in a picnic lunch with other friends and families from your community. ? Why? ? ... because there's enough for everyone ... because sharing is more fulfilling than owning ... because corporations would rather the landfills overflow than anyone get anything for free ... because a sunny day outside is better than anything money could buy ... because "free trade" is a contradiction in terms ... because life should be a picnic, but it only will be if we make it happen ... because we live in a society, not an economy ... because there is too such a thing as a free lunch ? Contact us ? Please let us know if you are keen to take part in the Really Really Free Market. Let us know how you would like to contribute. ? Are you part of a performance, art, music, poetry or theatre group? Do you belong to a travelling flea circus or a troupe of radical trapeze artistes? We?d love to have you do your thing at the Really Really Free market. ? Send us an email: ? Call us: ? Visit our website: ? Where? ? Zandvlei, Muizenberg ? Directions ? Map ? When? ? The Kennedy Road Development Committee and the members of the shack dwellers movement, Abahlali baseMjondolo were on the receiving end of the police-sanctioned violence at the end of last month, when a group of about 40 men attacked members of these organisations while chanting ?anti-Mpondo? slogans and calling for ?all the amaZulu to come out?. This is a politically and ethnically motivated attack, which is attempting to silence voices of political opposition and exploit the poor. Together with Abahlali baseMjondolo, we call on President Jacob Zuma to intervene to end the criminalization of a democratically elected civil society organisation that seeks to improve the lives of its members, irrespective of their political, religious or ethnic backgrounds. Please send an email with anything you will be bringing or doing to this list and I will put it all together to be added to the website. Please only mention things you will definitely contribute - you can always bring and do more on the day, of course. Let me start the ball rolling. Looks nice. The map didn't fit when I tried to print it out though. The banner on top doesn't come out well when I print it on my laser - its basically light grey with white writing. I'm going to be out of touch for a couple of days (mini-holiday!) but will do some editing - the text is cool but its too much, the font size ends up too small and you know how people are with reading lots of stuff. :( (Also, maybe the paragraphs should be fully justified instead of left justified?) I LOVE the design - the organic flowy-ness of it is great! What layout software are you using btw? Looks nice. The map didn't fit when I tried to print it out though. The banner on top doesn't come out well when I print it on my laser - its basically light grey with white writing. Cool i will try and make it black and white and play with the saturation levels to make it stronger. I'm going to be out of touch for a couple of days (mini-holiday!) but will do some editing - the text is cool but its too much, the font size ends up too small and you know how people are with reading lots of stuff. :( (Also, maybe the paragraphs should be fully justified instead of left justified?) Could you make the change with the text? there is a lot I landed up having to use number 9 and squishing the words quite a lot closer together. If we could summarise the text to basics then we can fit it all in with a bit of space for design breath and ease. Not sure what you mean with the paragraphs...? One thing I would like to change if the text shrinks is the order of text. It is meant to read from what the rrfm is through to the how's and why's. Think it makes better reading sense. There just wasn't enough space for this, I really feel there should be some form of design and logo type thing on the front/first page as well as the text. This way works as well, but if the text shrinks then we can play with the flyer a bit more. I just wouldnt know where to start - it all seems to relevant and informative. I LOVE the design - the organic flowy-ness of it is great! What layout software are you using btw? Thanks, I'm using Illustrator and Indesign I'll only get a chance to play with this a bit later today or tomorrow afternoon, depending when i get some other deadlines out of the way. m On Thu, Oct 22, 2009 at 6:56 AM, Andreas Spath wrote: > Peter and Mandy, please join the RRFM facebook group. Basically if you are driving towards town on Albert Road (the lower main road that runs past the Biscuit Mill) you will pass the Biscuit mill on your right. Continue straight over some robots where the turn off to the highway is and the Old Castle Breweries are and you will soon see a little park on your left with a church just after. there is a pedestrian crossing and some robots. At the pedestrian crossing my building is on the left hand side - almost opposite the Woodstock train station and the Baltic Timbers. You can park in the little slip way - station rd- just before the building next to the church, or try and see if there is room inside. at the boom there is a door and stairs. I'm on the first floor. you just meander towards the back of the first floor and yell at the top of your lungs...something will happen. I'm sure.
