Message-ID: <8feb9fefdfae2657e0b75fb446633e6e.squirrel@wfeet.za.net> This sounds like something worth contributing to: Want to promote an event, perspective or issue engaging community media? The Alternative Information Development Centre (AIDC) is working in partnership with the National Community Radio forum (NCRF) to produce a quarterly Amandla! News Diary. The Diary aims to support community media projects in South Africa to set a progressive news agenda and plan for their current affairs programing/ editorial - supporting them to develop a practice of 'peoples media' rather than aping the commercial and public media (following their stories, angles, and sources). The Diary will contain a calendar of events and commemorations as well as contact detail of relevant sources and will be printed as a poster and sent to all community radio stations (an other media) to display in their newsrooms every 3 months. Please support this initiative by sending through a list of events/commemorations you think should be covered by community media during July, August, and September 2009. Also send the names, designations, and contact details of relevant comrades/spokespeople/sources that can speak to issues the events highlight. Your events/spokespeople should reach mark at aidc.org.za no later than 12 June. Please share with relevant friends. I look forward to your contributions. Amandla! The movie we talked about is called Beyond Elections and you can find out more about it here: https://secure.pmpress.org/index.php?l=product_detail&p=59 While You Were Sleeping will be screening this movie at the Labia towards the end of next month. That doesn't mean we can't do it ourselves either before or after. I've got a bunch of other doccies which we might consider screening, including: The Revolution Will Not Be Televised (about Venezuela): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Revolution_Will_Not_Be_Televised_(documentary) A couple of CrimethInc movies: http://www.crimethinc.com/tools/dvd.html The Take (about Argentina): http://www.thetake.org/ Anarchism in America: http://www.akpress.org/2006/items/anarchisminamericaakpress The Iron Wall (about Palestine): http://www.theironwall.ps/ Emma Goldman - An Exceedingly Dangerous Woman Venezuela: Revolution From The Inside Out: http://www.freedomvoices.org/new/venezuela I don't necessarily want to be pushy about this, I would just like us to make a start on planning an event. Robin Hahnel's essay, Overcoming Blind Spots In Left Vision: Participatory Planning, could be a good place to start? http://www.zcommunications.org/znet/viewArticle/21474 As Hahnel notes: "So while we must do all we can to tame markets for now, because markets are antithetical to building the economics of equitable cooperation we must also work to replace markets with an altogether different coordinating mechanism." I've just come out of a weekend at the .ZA Geek Retreat in Johannesburg, while most of the discussions focused on market-led means to envision the future of the Internet in SA, there were two points that provide tactical opportunities to seek a role for the Internet in an equitable future: (1) The use of community wireless networks that provides free Internet access within a neighbourhood (think of content delivery, education, VoIP telephone calls), and (2) Consumer activism for increased access to broadband Internet connectivity as well as to reduce the cost of the Internet, mobile Internet (data), and SMS. What Iyf could do in this space is to publicise the real cost of Internet/mobile connectivity and what free access may mean for participatory democracy (e.g.: hosted applications to support community-run budgets). On this, I have spoken to Andreas and we think we need to meet so we can start working on something... We can carry on with our usual Sunday's at 11h00, if so we coudl meet the 5th July or the 12th July - please let me know if this is cool and which date is best so we can try to get everyone there. Another option woudl be to do a week day evening but not sure if those with kids can do this (might be nice to be able to leave the little buggers at home ) Please get back with dates and ideas. Comradely Mandy Meeting: 6 June 2009 Community House, Salt River, Cape Town Present: Lettie, Peter, Andreas, James, Glen, Asanda, Megan, Mandy and lots of kids! Discussion was held around the purpose of the meeting and it was agreed that, given NOPE was more like project and we wanted to do more beyond the state and elections, basically ? where to from here? A long brainstorming session followed on numerous possibilities which focussed around the group wanting to share skills and news about different struggles, events and what?s happening in Cape Town and link up with these. Run events similar to NOPE which are political but FUN. Many ideas were discussed and it was agreed we could do a number of things, the final focus areas follow but to do justice to all the ideas and make sure they are not lost, here are some of the groups thoughts as they emerged (Group please add to minutes if there is something cool that you think I left out ? ta!) including: Film Screenings, Economics education, connect people through a database, training on newsletter development, the Really, Really Free Market (end November when the weather is better), Building art, Using technology like SMS?s, Get someone arrested for climbing a tree to protest CT by-laws, Study Group for skills and knowledge exchange, Music linked to art and animation, use of watercolour protest art. Concrete things we can use and could do for now: Set up a Website and mailing list ? Peter would do this, Mandy needs to find out if she can get an NPO number, ideas to include on the website would be book reviews stuff on Anarchist Kids and what we are doing. Accessible Film screenings ? first one Beyond Elections Book Fair Political education workshop starting with the comrades Zabalaza have been contacted by. Megan can assist with illustrations and Mandy and Andreas con work on the material Lettie would work on fundraising, we need equipment and should put a proposal together ? everyone should think about a fund raiser Whilst the meeting agreed that we have different political positions we all agreed on four fundamental principles that would form the basis of the group: Anti-Authoritarian Anti-Capitalist Anti-Discrimination (We believe in equality for all in terms of race, sex, age, ability, sexual orientation etc.) Communalist Date: Tue, 23 Jun 2009 22:02:22 -0700 From: andreas_spath at yahoo.com To: iyf-ct at lists.resist.ca Subject: [Iyf-ct] A potentially interesting organising tool?
