Hi team,
I received a request for support from Red-tailed Hawk at the Oshkimaadzig Unity Camp up in the Penetanguishene area. The letter and list of supplies they are looking for is below.
Admittedly, I don't know very much about this action. But it seems like a good one and they definitely need support to maintain this reclamation into the winter. I'd like to propose a $500 donation to them.
It's time sensitive because some of the folks will be in the area on Sunday, but we could donate later if need be too, so there's not too much pressure.
Thanks,
-p
Ahnii Boozhoo (hello, greetings)
Giibwanisi ndizhniikaaz (My name is Red-tailed Hawk)
I am a co-founder of ACTION (Anishinabek Confederacy To Invoke Our
Nationhood) and the Oshkimaadziig Unity Camp. In case you don't know what
ACTION is, its a grassroots organization that seeks to build a national
organization, that separate from Band Councils and kanada, which aims to
rebuild our nationhood through biskaabiiyaang (decolonization). This work
will be done through reestablishing our original, clan governance system,
and traditional ways of living.
We seek this vision through our current project, the Oshkimaadziig Unity
Camp which is a land reclaimation in Awenda Provincial Park (just north of
Barrie, Ontario). Our occupation of our traditional territories, has been
going on for close to 20 months. Since we began, we have faced community
backlash, repression/oppression from the agents of the state like the OPP,
the MNR (Ministry of Natural Resources) the park superintendent, and of
course the Chief and Council.
We are caught in a delicate game of chess, where the board is weighted
heavilyin favour of the oppressors. We have recognized that the current
regime currently called kanada, has the best counter insurgency programs
in the world for all of our medicine peoples, and elders have been
co-opted into employment that is funded by the kanadian government.
These people have been forced by the beaurocrats from the AANDAC to stay
away from us. “We are poison, we are renegades, we are a black mark on
the people.” We of course have no idea what the hell they are talking
about. We recognize a blatant flaw in this world, more specifically to
our people. We recognize that this flaw, is capitalist in nature, and we
need to break away from this, and essential re-build from the ground up.
We are frontline land defenders in the heart of the revolution. But the
problem is, that we are not funded, and many of our own people don't
believe in what we are doing, too afraid to support us, or are just too
damn broke. Many times, I have had to leave the reclaimation site, just
so that I can re-join the very society that we aim to break away from, to
earn money to support the camp. This frustrates the fuck out of me.
In short, the revolution needs to funded, and we are broke ass. This
transitionary period that we find ourselves in, is a delicate and fucked
up one where, we can see where we want to be, but we don't have the tools
necessary to get there. These tools, require, time, energy, travel, gas,
networking, websites, cell phones, hunting supplies, and of course money.
And we don't have any. We have a website that has a “donate” button, but
no one has donated in 10 months. We have a bank account that has
permission to directly debit another persons bank account electronically
through “sustainer forms”, (like those NGO's you see standing on the
street), but currently I am the only one who donates monthly to the ACTION
account. We have an uphill battle, which is more or less a fucking sheer
mountain of an obstacle to climb up, but we have begun. Our 20 month
occupation is should give you an example of our determination. We know
many of you have toonies and loonies, kicking around. We know that you
can sacrifice a Tim Horton's coffee for a week or two. We know that you
have the ability to donate some extra funds. (I can hear the change
jingling in your pockets from here!)
Support our liberation movement. Support the decolonization of Turtle
Island. Help us liberate ourselves, and in doing so, see your own
liberation within our struggle.
Enclosed in this letter is a camp wish list. We will be presenting on
Sunday at 3:30 pm, and we will be available to make collections there. We
hope that you will be there to find out first hand about who we are, and
what we are all about.
Thank you for your time in reading this.
