Isaac Kawapit, who guided and mentored the Nishiyuu walkers, has passed on.
This obituary is very sad, but also inspiring. For those who might not
remember, the Nishiyuu walkers, all youth between 17-22, trekked more than
1500 kms from the northern James Bay Cree community of Whapmagoostui to
Ottawa this past winter, over a period of more than two months. As they got
closer to their destination, upwards of 200 youth from other Indigenous
communities joined the march along the way. The welcome in Ottawa in March
this year was 5000-strong. Condolences to the friends, family and relations
of Issac, and to all who were mentored and inspired by him.
