What Does It Mean To Occupy Already Occupied Lands?

With an intro from Tigerlily Quorra, an activist with Occupy Ottawa and a
Kwakuitl woman.

Friday, March 23 at 7pm
Desmarais Hall, DMS 1160
Desmarais Hall is located on the Northwest corner of Laurier Ave. East and
Waller St.

Description: What does it mean to Occupy already occupied lands? How does
the Occupy movement relate to 500 years of resistance on Turtle Island?

Ottawa is unceded and occupied Algonquin territory, so what, exactly, does
the name "Occupy Ottawa" signify? There are, in fact, numerous military
invasions, aka occupations all over the world, including the ongoing
occupations of Afghanistan and of Palestine. Given all this, there has
been a strong debate both within and outside of the Occupy movement over
the name itself, and over the movement foregrounding an anti-colonial
politics that address the lived experiences of indigenous peoples,
acknowledges their ongoing resistance to the Canadian settler state, and
that draws from the large body of anti-colonial theory and practice that
exists.

This event is part of an ongoing dialogue that Occupy Ottawa wants to have
both internally, and with the broader public. So come out to learn from
these indigenous activists, and to have a respectful discussion of the
question of, "What does it mean to Occupy lands that are already
Occupied?"

This event featured speakers Tom B.K. Goldtooth, Clayton Thomas-Muller and
Leanne Simpson with MC Tannis Nielson to explore and discuss these
dynamics of the Occupy movement.
