This coming July marks the 20th anniversary of the “Oka Crisis”. The events
at Kanehsatake were a crucial landmark in the history of Indigenous
resistance to colonialism, and in the assertion of Indigenous
self-determination.
In the context of today’s Indigenous struggles for land and
self-determination, social and environmental justice activists need to
understand and appreciate the significance of the events at Kanehsatake
almost 20 years ago.
As part of that effort, QPIRG Concordia, along with the Indigenous
Solidarity Committee, co-present a screening of Alanis Obomsawin’s
award-winning feature NFB film: KANEHSATAKE: 270 YEARS OF RESISTANCE.
The film will be proceeded by a short address by CLIFTON ARIHWAKEHTE, a
member of the Kanehsatake Mohawk Community and a participant in the events
of 1990.
ABOUT THE FILM: On a July day in 1990, a confrontation propelled Native
issues in Kanehsatake and the village of Oka, Quebec, into the international
spotlight. Director Alanis Obomsawin spent 78 nerve-wracking days and nights
filming the armed stand-off between the Mohawks, the Quebec police and the
Canadian army. This powerful documentary takes you right into the action of
an age-old Aboriginal struggle. The result is a portrait of the people
behind the barricades. (1993, 119 mins). Info:
