MONTREAL, January 30, 2008 -- Two indigenous youth from so-called "British
Columbia" will be in Montreal this Thursday as part of a speaking tour to
raise awareness about opposition to the 2010 Vancouver/Whistler Winter
Olympics, and its negative effects. Their main demand is: "No Olympics on
stolen land" referring to the fact that "BC" is unceded native territory.
Already, more than two years before the scheduled opening ceremony, natives
and non-natives have protested against the upcoming games with various
disruptive protests, actions and occupations. The official Olympic flag was
stolen by the Native Warrior Society last year, weeks after the death of a
native elder -- Harriet Nahanee -- who had protested an Olympics highway
expansion. The stolen flag is shown here: http://no2010.com/node/11
Kanahus Pellkey and Dustin Johnson, members of the Native Youth Movement,
will be speaking at the *main entrance of Montreal's Olympic Stadium on
Thursday, January 31 at 11am.* They will be joined by Marcel Sévigny, a
Montreal housing rights and anti-poverty activist for 4 decades. He will
recall the negative impacts of the 1976 Olympics, including the housing
crisis.
Later on Thursday evening, Kanahus and Dustin will address a local audience
at the Native Friendship Center of Montreal (6:30pm, 2001 Boulevard
St-Laurent).
