Mohawks blockade highway through Deseronto
Posted 10 hours ago

About 75 Aboriginal protesters have sealed off a main street through Deseronto,
about five kilometres southwest of Napanee, in a land dispute with a
Kingston-based realtor.

Nibourg Developments had said it would begin clearing brush today on property
it owns.

Mohawks camped out on the property overnight and this morning they set up
blockades on Highway 2 at Deseronto Road, just east of Deseronto.

"They've got east and westbound blocked," Const. Jackie Perry, of Napanee
provincial police, said this morning.

Perry said vehicles are being allowed to go north on Deseronto Road at the
T-intersection.

Developer Emile Nibourg said a work crew went to the site on April 21 to finish
clearing brush, but Mohawks arrived to claim the land.

He said the crew left the property with police after the arrival of what he
called "40 to 50 native warriors."

Nibourg told local politicians that workers would return this week.

The protesters have also set up blockades at the intersection of Bridge Street
West and Deseronto Road.

The dispute is over property that is part of the Culbertson Tract -- land that
has been the focus of negotiation between the federal government and the
Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte since 1995.

The Ontario Provincial Police are standing by, monitoring the situation and
motorists have been asked to seek alternative routes around Deseronto.
